  1. Rookie question here. Is it possible to take a PCI device (e.g., a PCI capture card) and put it in an external enclosure for portability? Asking because I own a capture card but wanted to be able to transport it to/from work. If these things don't exist, how hard would it be to build one?

I don't even know how to begin answering that one

Is this capture card simply a FireWire card or is it something akin to an expensive hardware encoder?

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=pci+extender

    from google:

    http://www.mobl.com/expansion/pci/

Looks like the one you are looking for is not exactly portable. Avid used a similar box when apple made the G3's with only 3 or 4 PCI slots, a great big box for 6 or more cards, with it's own power supply. I would also say that cheap is not going to be the word. Unless that card cost you more the about $500, it might be just as cost effective to buy another card and leave them installed in the 2 machines.

check that here is the price list:

So unless your card cost around $3000, don't bother with these types of special purpose extensions.

  4. It might be cheaper to just put a firewire card in all your machines and to use something like ADSTech PYRO AV Link.

    Definately alot less time consuming!

It's a Hauppauge PVR-250 card. The reason I'm wondering if it's possible to put it in its own case is because I want a capture device that I can use that is portable from one computer to another (e.g., to another one of my computers here). I know there are portable MPEG-2 capture devices (I'm currently testing the ADS Instand DVD 2.0) but I like the Hauppauge card except that it's not easily portable.

It is possible, but it is expensive. Hundreds for a PCI to PCMCIA convertor box. If you MUST have portability, getting a FW or USB2 device is a better option.

Yeah, I could see using it for the DV Storm since it's a $1200 card, but even then its a pretty expensive deal. I second the suggestion of getting a USB or FireWire device instead. You'll end up spending less than the PCI device you want.
