Goal--DVDs for play on TV and computers

I've been reading here for a couple days and read lordsmurf's guides. I've also talked to several people at ADS. I have a couple questions to refine my understanding and optimum settings for capture.

I understand that 352x480 and br=4 should give me all the quality of the VHS tapes for burning to DVD and viewing on TV.

Do the following change the optimum settings for capture?

---viewing on a TV vs. a computer?

---editing the captured Mpeg vs. just cutting/trimming before burning

---Resizing the Mpeg to fit a DVD vs. burning as captured

    1. 352x480 vs. 720x480

    2. CBR vs. VBR, and selecting a bitrate setting (ex. CBR=6 vs. VBR=6 or VBR=4 vs. VBR=6)

I captured at many settings and viewed at 100% and full screen (1280x1024) on my digital monitor. My wife consistently picked best to worst in the following order: (a few of these were very close, but she always chose 720x480 cbr=8 over 352x480 cbr=5
    720x480 cbr=8
    352x480 cbr=8
    352x480 cbr=5
    720x480 cbr=5
    352x480 cbr=3

The video, VHS-C, was of my daughter’s voice recital. It seemed that there were subtle differences in jaggedness of lines, shading gradient in darker areas, sharpness in details, and slight difference in color quality.

I burned four of these to a DVD and really couldn't see any differences on the TV.

My goal is to have maximum flexibility with saved files while preserving maximum quality without needlessly wasting space.

    Thanks

    Ken

I have the IDVD-2 not the +dv, but they are supposed to work the same>

Playback on pc will be different than if played back on tv, it will look better on tv.

Given the length of source, capture at highest bitrate that still allows it to fit on ouput media. (adusting for any cuts/edits). Media is cheap relative to your memories and this will give produce highst quality that will still fit on disc. As a hedge to the future, I burn the raw mpg to disc as achieve for later re-use/edit
