  1. On my old Compaq Celeron 566mhz, in Win98 or XP when I put it in standby it totally stopped the CPU fan (a crappy, tiny "AVVID"). Why doesn't it do this on my new PC, which I built? The CPU fan came with a 3pin to 4pin adapter, but also from the adapter an extra connector for CFAN1 on mobo, which I connected. The fan speed can be detected through programs. Why doesn't it turn off or slow down?

    AMD Athlon 2500+
Thermaltake Volcano 9 (running at ~3800-3900RPM, still loud )
    MSI K7N2 Delta-L
    Windows XP

  2. Most motherboards do not allow turning off of the CPU FAN. The ones that do -- have that option in BIOS to enable or disable that function. Even if they did -- it would not work when connected to a PSU (unless you have an Antec TruPower w/ the special FAN PSU connectors. For a mobo to control fan speed the fan would need to be connected to mobo power -- not just the speed sensor.

There are a few options ...

    1. A fan with a thermal sensor or probe. Thermaltake, Vantec and Antec all make "SmartFans".

    2. Get a TruPower PSU

    3. You could try to use this utility called SpeedFan ...

It supports various mobo's / chipsets and allows you to vary fan speed according to CPU temp. It may provide some relief. I remember the days of my Delta 60mm fan and quite frankly do not miss them. Just too Friggin loud !!!

I had a MB a year ago (Damn, can't remember the name or brand) that fully utilized STR (Suspend to RAM). When in standby everything shut off, including the PS fan, and the computer state was saved to RAM (Idle current kept the memory alive). It was great. Instant on, like hibernate, but no delays. This is where all MB's need to be. No boot delays. Had to restart occasionaly to update the system, though. XP is capable of this, with the right MB and power supply.

I'm pretty sure that my mobo supports STR or a variant of it. If I enable it in the BIOS, will stand by in Windows XP automatically make use of it, or do I need to change setings?

    Ripper, thanks, i'll try speedfan.
