Is it to be converted from MPEG 2 to MPEG 1 so that a third party codec or filter is not needed ?

  3. yes, that is exactly what i want. you see the computer that i am using has the codecs to play a svcd file. I downloaded the file from the links available from this website.

The next thing that i know, i tried to play the same svcd file from another computer in the house and it failed. So, i wish that i could reencode all the files again so that a third party codec filter is not needed!

    Do you know how?

TMPGEnc will convert it (unless you prefer another program). Just use the VCD template in the project wizard. Is there any reason why you can't install the mpeg-2 filter on the computer in question? Just curious. It would certainly save you some time.

This is true , it would be much easier if you could install MPEG2 software on the machine you wish to play on as the reencoding will take some time

  6. may i know how many free mpeg2 filter are out there?

The one that i downloaded "mpeg2codec_installer" (no offence) is a bit unstable. Some files which were converted from dvd to svcd could not be played on my wmp 9 series.

To tell you the truth , the files can be played, it's just that it hanged after playing for 1 sec or two. That's why i'm so keen on converting it to mpg 1!!

I tried tmpgenc but some converted files still won't play smoothly even though it is re-encoded!

    Any other ideas for me?

PS: One more thing helpers, the mpeg2_codec_installer has these files inside, MPEG-2.exe, Mpeg2Decoder.ax, and Mpeg2Parser.ax. May i know what are the ax files for? I mean what is it, really?

Install the demo version of Power DVD. I'm told that even after the trial period ends the codecs will still be used by Windows Media Player.

  8. i have power dvd 5, but how will it make a difference...?

Yeah, one thing that i think i need to tell you. I just tried something with the powerdvd. You see, the svcd files plays perfectly with powerdvd, but with wmp it doesn't. Is there a way to make wmp to use powerdvd's filters?? I think this will solve all my problems...

I'm a bit confused. Do you have Power DVD on the machine that has difficulty playing SVCD files? If so just play your files with that instead of WMP. I stopped using Media Player a couple of years ago.

  10. oh i'm sorry for all the confusion. Here is the story...

I bought a realmagic xcard recently. i have some svcd files that i wish to play using my own program. I'm using MCI with VB6 sp5 under win2k env.

By using MCI, i have difficulties in playing svcd files with the svcd codecs installed. If i don't have the codecs installed, i totally couldn't play the file. After installing the svcd codecs, i managed to play some of the file but to my disappointment, not all the files could be played...

By using mci, i noticed that whenever wmp is able to play a certain file, my program which was programmed to utilize mci will be able to play it. If wmp fails, then my program fails too...So i was wondering if i could direct wmp to use power dvd's filter then maybe i will be able to use my program to play the svcd files.

I'm sorry that i've kept you wondering why i didn' use powerdvd to play my svcd files. If i use power dvd to play the files, it won't be able to utilize my xcard to output it to the tv, i'm only seeing the video on my monitor.

I hope you have a better picture of the situation now, i'm so sorry for all the confusion i have made to all...
    Warm Regards,
    Jacky
