Wow, what a thread.
Smurf says we should just burn the Constitution, if "we" let them get away with that.
You should more likely insist that your Reps uphold the Constitution or get the hell out of office, and VOTE them out.
Your Constitutional rights are being pummeled on a daily basis, and, the problem is, as long as they're not stepping on "my" toes, well, it's OK.
You (WE) are having our Constitutional rights slowly stripped from us, for the greater good of the greater number of people, which, originally meant to improve things for all. Now it means for tor the politically connected, rich, special interest, and, finally, Bush people.
Sorry, I can't make this non-political, Bush is the worst thing to happen to this country in a hundred years.
The Patriot Act has given anyone the right, indeed, has made patriots of people who turn in their neighbors for anything at all that they don't understand, and file sharing is one of them. You're all thieves, to swap music. My stock in MCA, Disney, whatever, would be WAY higher if they'd throw you all in jail.
Jeez, I hope all you 'Murricans, as LBJ would say, remember this come November, they are not after Ken Lay, or Kozlowski, fo0r ripping off billions, they're after you for ripping THEM off for the cost of a CD or DVD, what, distributor cost of 5 bucks or so?
Painkiller,
Do you also recall that Orrin Hatch was in favor of some kind of destructive code that would reach out to your machine and destroy it, literally.
Democracy in action.
Someone above said vote 'em all out. If any of yunz are allowed to vote (some of you are young, many more of you will be in jail because of file sharing, per these new interpretations, mebbe not allowed to vote) vote 'em all out. At least total newbies have to study to learn how to screw the electorate. It does come a little naturally, as no one who was willing to work for a living could lie well enough to convince 51% of his electorate that he was the answer to all their problems.
Ah,well, you'll bitch a bit, and still fall in, like the good little sheep that you are. What's the word, sheeple? "I love my Representative/Senator"
Cheers,
George

To compare this action to "Nazi Germany" shows just how ignorant, whiney, and just plain stupid some people are. GO FIND SOMEONE WITH A NUMBER TATOOED ON THEIR ARM AND TALK TO THEM!!! (As I have done). "Disgusted" is not a strong enough word. Do you READ?? Do you THINK?? MULTIPLE expletives deleted.
Does piracy affect sales? Probably. It is almost certainly not the impediment the RIAA says, nor with equal certainty is there no effect at all, as many contend. Do you think piracy will disappear when songs are downloadable at 10 cents apiece? "Free" will always be better than "not free", no matter how cheap. What will your argument be then?
Now, somebody is going to compare sales figures here. Meaningless, without considering other factors. Do you know that even with the TREMENDOUS destruction bombing caused to German industry,(I've been there, I've SEEN it), their production of war material in all categories (except oil) INCREASED right up to the end of the war? Does this mean bombing did not work? The question is "what would production have been if there had been no bombing at all?" The question is impossible to answer accurately, but there is an obvious assumption.
IMO, it is years of Liberal politics that have conditioned people to believe that they should simply be able to take whatever they feel they want or need, rather than pay for it. Bitch about big corporations all you want, most of us FEED OUR FAMILIES with a paycheck from just such a "big corporation". Are there excesses, sure. BUT - having a lot of money is not automatically a bad thing. If a rich person is smart, they invest their wealth in such things as production facilities, where many of us work and earn those paychecks I mentioned. If they are stupid, they blow it and the money is distributed back into the economy.
The ignorance of basic economic factors among many scares me. The desire for profit may not be the best thing on which to base an economy, it just works better than any other yet discovered. Just how much proof do you need that SOCIALISM DOES NOT WORK????
Say, I want your car. You want $5,000 for it? I think that's too much, so I'll just take it. It is YOUR CAR, you get to decide the price. If I don't like it, I go find another one. -

god knows what our rights are in Australia at the moment because the parliment claim they can make any law. The police are searching cars on the state borders without search warrents under some new law the NSW parliment introduced just recent. We should be protected by the bill of rights 1688 but the courts are ignoring it.
http://dkd.net/freedom/borights.html this link is how the New South Wales Solicitor General responded to questions asked about the Bill of Rights
Im thinking we will all be eventually screwed in the future by corrupt judges that should be executed for treason. -
To gmatov - Yes, I am well aware of everything that Orrin Hatch has said. I would also like to take the opportunity to point out that President Bush is not our enemy.
Are there problems with the Patriot Act? I would expect so. Just like every other piece of legislation in our country. Abuses happen every day, at every level of enforcement. To lay this on one or two people, is counterproductive.
My suggestion? (to everyone, of course) Vote, but use your head and lose the anger. Vehemence gets you nothing, it just continues until YOU decide to end it.
The system, as it exists here in the United States, can work. But it requires everyone to be intelligent and work (and play) together.
The operative word is, together.
To go off on one's own and just wallow in the depths of despair and hatred gets you/us nowhere.Whatever doesn't kill me, merely ticks me off. (Never again a Sony consumer.)
