Several motherboard reviews I have read on www.hardocp.com showed that USB 2.0 and Firewire, (when both are integrated on the motherboard) show nearly equal speeds, (Showing that the links are not being saturated,) but the CPU usage was much lower when using firewire rather than USB 2.0 therefore, firewire is faster, because it leaves more CPU resources available while transfering data.
and for the record, Firewire supports 63 devices, USB 1.1 and 2.0 support 127 devices.
Many Mac computers can be started in "Target Disk mode" turning your Mac into a firewire hard disk, (for file transfers even easier than firewire networking...) -

USB 2.0 burst speed is pretty quick (Why it's rated at 480). It's average rate is slower...and it isn't as steady rate of transfer.
Not to mention it has more overhead.
