Can someone that understands the TMPGENc IVTC tool please help me? I understand 3:2 pulldown and IVTC and fields and frames and all of that. But in the IVTC window, there are many frames at the top each labeled 0a, 0b, 1a, 1b, etc etc. what is the meaning of this? Is 0A the 0 frame with the a field first and 0b the 0 frame with the b field first?

It's InVerse TeleCine.
It converts so you can watch 23.976fps FILM videos on a DVD Player using 29.97fps (which what the DVD requires), even though it's truly 23.976fps. This saves filesize space (less frames to encode), and provides a more smoother playback.
You can select the 'Automatic' method, but that'll take some time. There's a complicated, but faster manual method by finding the pattern of your video and manually selecting the frames. In 23.976fps, you have to SELECT only 2 out of 5 frames.

Yeah, I know what IVTC stands for and why you want to do it and about AAA BB CCC DD field order etc etc. I just don't understand what the IVTC tool in TMPGENc is trying to tell me. My original file is 30fps and has the 2 interlaced frames then 3 non-interlaced frames. So it has been telecined. I just don't understand what the Oa Ob 1a 1b 2a 2b 3a 3b etc etc means in the TMPGEnc IVTC tool.

The 0a 0b 1a 1b is arranged that way because of the field. Even-Odd fields (I think).
What is your original file, btw? -
My original file is a 30fps capture from television. It has been telecined from 24fps to 30fps and I am trying to take it back to 24fps. I have always used the Vdub IVTC but I get some occasional jerking on the final SVCD. I was going to start using TMPGENc. It seems to give better results, but the noise filtering in TMPGENc is lousy (compared to temporal and smart in Vdub). I would like to use the Vdub Telecide/Decimate but this takes too many steps (I am time limited) since Vdub won't allow Decimate to remove the frames.
