  1. Devils Advocate Position Warning:

Although I had been reading this site for quite some time, the first time I posted was in response to a request for information that I had just found out myself. I was somewhat annoyed at the imposed "cooling-off" period just to get my post out. Still, it was low on my daily list of annoyances.

...still, the quality of the posts on this site probably benefit from this rule.

    laterz.

You're making a deadly assumption to your site with the "(read newbies)" bit. Just because someone is a newbie to YOUR SITE doesn't make them a "id10t NoOb" (in the words of so many childish people online). Heck, if one of (company X's) engineers wanted to post here, THEY'D have to face your "you're an idiot newbie who's not worthy of posting here" period. They'd probably just leave over that one...

Unfair and untrue. Most of the time people are polite - but its hard to be polite all the time esp. in the face of stubborn stupidity and a lack of initiative. Anyway, a bit of criticism is good for a persons character - without some kind of challenge we'd all be crawling in the slime

And the corollary is: if you do chase away the idiots then those that remain aren't idiots - and that helps keep up the level of conversation.

Not to sound rude, but you also have to think of the saying, "if the shoe fits.....", when you see the term "newbie". If you don't believe it applies to you, don't take it personally. And if someone tells you that you know nothing, are a flaming idiot and should be burned at the stake for even thinking something so stupid, and you don't believe that's true, don't take it personally. And if you do think it's true about you, try to change it. It's that simple.

Nobody said the policy made them an idiot newbie. Judgement will, however, be passed when it is appropriate. There is a HUGE difference between a newbie and an idiot newbie. A newbie asks an intelligent question that could probably be answered by a forum search or a guide, regardless of their level of laziness.

An idiot newbie asks for warez. If someone is ******* stupid enough to read the forum rules, then ask for warez on their first post, they've earned the right to be an idiot newbie.

As for 'company x's' engineers? I'm sure all they'd have to do is contact the Forum Administrator, introduce themselves, have their credentials checked at the door, and then be given immediate access. Maybe that's why some member's names appear in black on the forum list?

List? What list? And in black? Doesn't that mean that they have been "blacklisted"?(See, they are in black and they are on a list!)

Sorry. I'd like to believe you, but you're a newbie 8)

Dude. Information is information. If you have it, share it, and people will think well of you. If you don't have it, and try to "talk the talk", people will spot you as an idiot regardless of post count.

    So let it be said.

    POST COUNT DOES NOT MATTER!!!!!!!

But time does matter. If you join here we want you to know the rules. When you started driving they didn't just give you a license. You have to get a permit first. Then after 1 year you got the real thing. We only have a few days of "permit time".

My post count doesn't mean I've graduated from newbie status. I haven't. I spent most of my time here enjoying the banter. Pathetic? Maybe, but I happen to like the people here.

I can make my own discs. BFD. I'm still a newbie. When I write my first guide, that means I think I know what I'm talking about. Then maybe I'll graduate. Until then...

That's not just because they're for Macs, it's because they were written by you, and we all know how much of an "idiot newbie" you are :P

Who here really reads anything by TGPO? Honestly?

    Just kidding......

P.S. I still consider myself a major newbie, and I've been reading a ton of stuff on this site for about 2 years.... And yes, I spent a lot of time here before I became a member, "Joined: 04 Feb 2003"

Anyway, we all know that tgpo is not a real person, but is just a computer generated responder. If you don't believe me, just check out the post below!

My first reaction to hearing that tgpo wrote "guides" was, "really??" Then I took a gander at a few of them. These guides helped confirm that tgpo is just a computer generate "auto-answerer"!

It seems that newcomers are "newbies" in at least one point. Forum culture. As time goes by, newcomers seem to understand and apreciate the spirit. Or they disappear.

Time is the fiercest judge of all...

PS. most other forums, including the Mainconcept forum, show newcomers as "Newbies". I remember BJ_M there as a newbie - fancy that...
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

It sounds to me, from your initial 'foaming at the mouth' post to your most recent you have serious issues with authority.
Anyone who shows an interest, displays a willingness to learn and doesn't ask completely dumb questions will be treat exactly the same as everyone else.
Post count is not an issue, I've been here long enough to know that.
The people of which you speak, the ones of a balanced mind who will bring something to the forum would not face the "you're an idiot newbie who's not worthy of posting here period" because without doubt they wouldn't see it like that.
    And anyway, it doesn't exist.
It's already been said but the issue of 24 hour posting delay was to fend off the idiots who wanted a crack and wanted it NOW!, the ones who wanted a download for a cinema release DVD or wanted the answers fed to them on a plate.
    Bottom line?
You are faced with this option before you register, you have a choice.
    It really is that simple.

I share the sentiment. Case in point: LORDSMURF

My post count means I answer questions, ask questions, give comments and BS in the off-topic area. I've got a pretty good grasp on video theory, restoration, conversion and editing ... at least with tools that most of us "lowly consumers" can afford. Even then, this still gets expensive.

I too was a "newbie" in this forum about 6-7 months ago. But I was surely not a newbie to video. I'd been working with analog video for a decade, seriously for 6-7 years, futsing with DVD and VCD for the past 2-3. Before this site, I operated in what I'll call the "video underground" of people that communicated by newsgroups, e-mail and AIM. People met at random that shared common hobbies. That's where I met guys like jw, duncan, and tex (he's the one that showed me this place). And we helped each other learn ATI and other tricks.

When I registered, I saw I couldn't post yet, so looked around, saw the rules and guides and other info, said to myself "F-it, I'll come back later". I didn't whine and groan and moan.

Some people call me "expert" or "specialist" or whatever. I don't know what I'd call myself. There's still so much I want to learn that I don't feel like an expert, things like Maya 4 (won it in a contest! :P ) and Adobe After Effects (cost $$$ probably ought to learn it) still elude me. I have to just sit back in awe sometimes when I get e-mails and PMs along the lines of "wow! it's really you!" and meet people that act all weird. I was talking to a guy in Best Buy once about media ... as usual the salesman was trying to tell me something stupid about DVDs ... I suggested he check out my new-at-the-time DVD Media Quality FAQ on my site lordsmurf.com. Apparently he was familiar with the site because of the ATI info, and his eyes bugged out and he gave this "is that really you" kind of question. I seriously wanted to run away from that, felt like I was under a microscope.

Before whining about rules, be lucky a place like this even exists. And be sure to thank Baldrick, whether it be with dollars or with a PM of "thanks for everything".

All this talk of all these other idiots....

    I feel so un-important now

BTW, the waiting period does little more than keep the casual spam blasters out, the persons hell bent on forum devastation will use the time to find their targets. But it will stave off some of the nimrods.

What's REALLY AMAZING is how many people are just hanging around at this site waiting to give you a hand in solving your problem ... and often give you some slack for lack of initiative. I can't remember how many times I've received the exact answer I needed, or given a suggestion as to where to go to find the answer, or what to try. And yes .... I've often missed questions that are on the site somewhere ... and been politely redirected. If you have ANY questions about video this is the premium place to be ... and I for one really appreciate that! So thanks to all you experts out there for all the advice that hasn't cost me a nickle. You won't get that at your local Best Buy, or CompUSA!

If you look at my post count you can see that they made me wait a year before i could post here, that was sure a tough rule for me,maybe it was cause i mentioned something about learning to build an a-bomb.

I too had the "waiting period" and used it to look around and learn. With my meager 188 posts, I still consider myself a "newbie" in a lot of situations...however I can create my very own DVDs...which is what I set out to do...I still do NOT know everything that there is to know about DVD or VCD creation, which is why I still visit here. I sometimes feel that I can answer (or offer advice) but still consider myself new...

I don't think I had to wait long to get the register confirmed at DVDRHelp Forums.

After my register details were entered, I just waited for a short time for the email to confirm my email address and that was it.

You have to be lucky with your timing of registration as well and I think 24 hours should be the maximum wait.

No problem, I think you just have to be patient. Other forums do make you wait for 48 hours or longer.

I remember once having registration problems at some other forum, taking too long and having ridiculous conditions on to me with technical glitches on membership. I declined and cancelled that one.

No one should have any problem here in this forum as long as you behave and follow the rules.
