Please help me in converting films on to discs or dvds pleas

please can somebody help im new to all this i d/l films but i can only watch them on my comp,i would like to know how to convert them so i can play on a stand alone dvd player.I have been told that i have to have the rite codecs aswell as the right programs to do it .i have been told about your site and been told its very helpfull .That is all i would like to know is wat software i need and how to do it please >i also have a dvd burner and its so frustrating it sitting here doing nothing im sure its not that hard i just need a helping hand hopefully there is some1 kind enough to help Only genuine peeps need reply please dont waste my time my email if u prefer is woolawoola_8@hotmail.com
