Just wondering what the general opinion is. When do you read a question, or look at the post count, and think "Newbie". I don't mean this in a bad way at all, just wondering.

Arrrggghhh!!! Sorry!
I still thought I was in the off-topic forum!
Can someone please move this?
Thanks,

I'm no expert but I reckon you stop being a newbie when you learn to post in the correct place
Willtgpo, my real dad, told me to make a maximum of 5,806 posts on vcdhelp.com in one lifetime. So I have. -
I think it would be hard to tell from post count alone. To me it's more a point of answering more questions than you ask, although I doubt any newbies here have asked hundreds of questions.
EDIT: Good one, Will. -
There's also the issue of the new members deemed newbie only because of their post count, the ones who've spent an age/lifetime in video production, have something valuable to give yet get scared from the site by some 5k+ post-count 16 year old know-it-all who doesn't like the way the subject header looks.

when I see any of the following topics, I think Newbie.
Help me.
Help me please.
What am I doing wrong?
What's the best ____?
This is probably simple.....
Just my thought on it. And I think that people can be newbies in 1 area, but be very helpful in others. I must admit that when it comes to aspect ratio's and capture resolution I am still almost completely lost, and I just follow other's advise about what will work. And don't even ask me to explain IVTC or 3:2 pulldown etc... Although in other areas I like to consider myself very well versed. -
It's a socioeconomic thing. Here are some of the basic guidelines.
* Americans are no longer newbies after their second post,
* Brits are no longer newbies after their first post,
* Australians still recognize Queen Elizabeth II as their Chief of State, so please see the rule regarding Brits,
* Kiwis may also refer to the rule regarding Brits,
* Ditto for those from Zimbabwe,
* Scandinavians pay way too much in taxes, so we make them feel good about themselves by letting them bypass the newbie moniker,
* Canadians are the enemy, we exile them to dvdrhelp.us,
* Greeks are allowed to graduate from newbie status after 7,000 posts, but they can never attain moderator status,
* People living in the Pittsburgh area who are of Balkan descent are geniuses who prefer to be disguised as newbies,
* Russians could care less about their newbie status, so long as the vodka keeps flowing,
* Residents of Arizona are content to be newbies forever, they're too stupid to know any better.

Since I deal only in creating DVDs, my list refers only to being a newbie in this art.
You are a newbie until you:
1) Can explain the difference between interlaced video and telecined video,
2) Know when and how to apply a proper IVTC to a captured video stream.
3) Know what "LOW DELAY" video means,
4) Can easily sync up your audio and video,
5) Can determine if your video is progressive or interlaced,
6) Know the difference between anamorphic 16:9 video and "letterboxed" 16:9 video,
7) Know how to create a anamorphic 16:9 video,
8) Know what are the correct (legal) video resolutions for DVD,
9) Know the difference between 44.1ksps audio and 48ksps audio,
10) Know what the maximum bitrate is for a DVD video elementry stream, and what the maximum combined bitrate is for a DVD video,
11) Know what Macrovision is, and what it looks like,
12) Know what Content Scrambling System (CSS) is and why you cannot add it to any DVD recordable disc,
13) Know what an aspect ratio is, and know what are the only two ARs allowed in DVD creation,
14) Know what a GOP is, and know what kind of pictures (frames) are in them,
15) Know how big a GOP can be.

It has nothing to do with the number of posts you have, but where you post.
When you find you are mostly posting in "Forum Index -> Other -> Off topic" you are no longer a newbie..."Terminated!" :firing: -

There is a difference between a novice, a competent user and an advanced user.
Perhaps you're just trying to be smart, who knows.
I have and will continue to produce first rate DVD's of my newborn son from anaolgue and MiniDV footage and I have no shame in admitting I can't answer all those questions.
Most are irrelevent in the ability to produce first rate DVD's.
Anyway, back to the topic...

Simple.

Once you learn how to do that then you stop being a newbie
And to add-on:
When you stop posting in pretty colors.

I think Will is right. When i first made a vcd of my kids and played it on a standalone the picture was dreadful and the sound wasn't far behind, so i went searching to find out how to do it properly and see what mistakes i was making - you get a very big thirst for knowledge when you really want to learn something.
learn't what i had to and sort of stopped.
same when I bought my dvd writer( ok. - what's all this vob/ifo thing )
when you get it working to your satisfaction you tend to stick with it
some people will swear by different apps - i've got mine and i'll probably stick with each one until i need to do something different.
If you search my posts, you'll find 90% are in now in the off topic forum,I do search the other forums to see if i can help but compared to alot of people here i have very limited knowledge of dvd authoring etc.
I only tend to help people i spot with the same apps as me and only then if it's useful - it's a bit silly replying to a thread that has 5 replies all telling to do the same thing. -

Who knows, maybe there are still people who wash their clothes in the stream and then put them through the mangle
Anyway, I'm not sure I like this 'moderator agreement, it's happening a little too often with too many mods lately

IMHO, you are no longer a newbie when you have the right attitude.
This can be shown in many ways, just a few being:
Using descreptive subject lines and not 'help me urgently'.
Realising that replying 'I have the same problem, what do I do' helps no-one.
Showing you can take 'insults' from jeex without getting upset and asking for the thread to be locked.
Knowing who Gina is/was is a dead giveaway.
Knowing what X means.
Knowing who tgpo is without starting a thread asking.
Being grateful when you get help rather than demanding it
Knowing how to use the quote feature.
Ignoring others typos, unless they are funny.
Taking part in every Poll even if you really couldn't care less
Spending more time here that at work/school
Knowing how/when/why to use smileys
Any more ? -
