Pleassssse Heeelp,I have been trying to burn DVD,s from my hard disk to my writer but about half way through the burn the read buffer starts dropping and then the write buffer level starts dropping down to 10% and back up to 90%.This Increases the burn time from the remaining time stated in Nero 6.I then check device manager ide controller etc,and my HD I am writing from has changed from DMA mode 5 to PIO.I then have to uninstall driver and reboot etc. This happens everytime and is driving me mad.I have done a complete install incase I had conflicting drivers but it still is doing the same.I can copy from my writer to the HD without any problems using shrink,it is just when writing.
my setup is
windows xp AMD Athlon 1900
512 SD RAM
Primary Ide HD 0 Master DMA mode 5
Primary Ide HD 1 Slave DMA mode 5 (where film is stored)
Secondary Ide Master Sony DWU 14A DVD RW Dma mode 2
Nero 6.0028

You may find this of some help :
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hwdev/tech/storage/ide-dma.mspx -
the problem is XP and there isn't anything you can do about it. Sure you can delete in device manager the secondary ide channel, reboot, set to DMA, reboot and burn away. I myself got tired of this and switched to win2000 which doesn't have this "we know better than you" kind of OS mentality.
If switching to win2000 isn't an option for you and you wish to stick with WinXP then your best off with giving up trying to burn on-the-fly and just rip to iso and burn iso with dvddecrypter. -

Nope the problem is XP...believe what/who you want. Not gonna argue with you but your wasting your time and kidding yourself into a false hope. Been there done that...tested it out on new computers to old computers ...tons of co-workers same problem. Spent 10+ hours registry patching this, changing IDE channels, patching firmware this and that. Ok whatever...I must not know what I'm talking about...lol.

At Last I think I have solved my problem...My setup was this
primary Ide master hard drive
slave hard drive with film
secondary ide dvd writer set to master
this was constantly causing my slave hard drive switching from ultra dma to pio mode.
I put my slave hard drive to master on the secondary ide and my writer as slave..this seems to work fine now and have made backups sucessfully....I dont know if this setup is correct but it works so sodit,I no longer have to wear wigs and can let my hair grow back.. -

I had exactly the same problem as you did (but with SONY DRU-500A).
1st - Remove in Windows DVD-R & DVD-ROM
2nd - Change DVD-R to Secondary MASTER
3rd - Buy a new IDE cable (round ones are preferable!)
PS: that problem is noticed mainly on some motheboards (mine is a Soltek witg VIA KT133A) and with good DVD-R devices! (like SONY) -
When I burn in nero the buffer level jumps from 98% to 10% , back and forth, so on and so forth.. I tried deleting the IDE channels, rebooting, and making sure they were on DMA. When I go into the device manager, my primary IDE channel is Ultra DMA mode 5.
Primary IDE channel : Master: Western digital 7200 rpm 80gig
Slave: Western digital 7200 rpm 120gig
Secondary IDE channel : Master: Plextor 708a
Slave: Creative DVD-ROM (6240E)
And (for some odd reason) it lists a 'Generic DVD-ROM SCSI cdrom device' as another drive...? That can't be normal... I tried to delete that but it just put itself back in after I rebooted.
I have the 4.6 ASPI layer thing installed, didn't fix anything.
What else can I try to do ?
Edit: If anyone has links to other threads that discuss this.. feel free to link to them because I forgot what I searched for to even find it before.. thanks a lot.=) -
The funny thing about this problem is ..... it doesn't seem to affect everybody with XP (myself included).
I am running XP Pro and have never had the problem, but my system is quite new, so maybe this is a factor.
It's definitely a feature in XP that causes the problem, but not for everyone. Clearly if XP doesn't like your hardware setup, you are plagued with problems and, like mr.bass many folk get pi$$ed off with it and switch OS. -
It never did this with my old Sony 8x CD burner. I would assume that my hard drives are fast enough for data transfer when i'm burning dvd's..
If anyone else cares to help me out... feel free to do so=) -
In my case it was with WinXP (before SP1 was out) and it would switch to PIO automatically after burning about 20 cds on-the-fly. It did this consistently and after spending well over 15 hours with the matter on various computers I gave up and went to win2000 and haven't looked forward ...lol.
