  1. Could I burn standard divx movies that I've downloaded from sharereactor for example and then play them like I would on the pc? Do I need to change the file in any way before I can play it or will it play directly like a dvd would?

Any help would be really appreciated!!

  2. Welcome to the board

    1. Don't advertise the fact that you are downloading movies, it is illegal and you will get banned.

    2. Read the guides on the left, they will explain how to take your avi file over to dvd-compliant.

  3. Actually in the UK we are still unable to be prosecuted for downloading. I've read the guides and it doesnt tell me explicitly whether I can put a divx file onto a dvd+/-r and play it directly in that form on a dvd player

Some players can play DivX (if your did, you'd know!), but mostly it needs to be reencoded and authored as VCD/SVCD/DVD. Look at the plethora of AVI to VCD/SVCD/DVD guides found left.
What's procecutable or not is beside the point. Here at DVDRHelp there's a rule that bans all discussions/mentioning of downloaded copyrighted marterial. As you haven't stated (yet) what kind of material you've downloaded, you should be in the clear.

  5. So am I right in saying then if i buy a dvd player that is capable of playing divx I do not have to re-encode anything and can play in the dvd player from the 'raw' file I have?

You would be correct. There are a number of new standalones that will accept Divx discs. Some can even be networked with your computer to play streamed Divx files directly. Search Ebay for examples.

In principle, yes. But as DivX comes in 3 major versions (and a number of minor), and the AVI can be interleaved with audio in "any" format, I think you'll be disappointed if you believe that any DivX AVI you download will play without problems. I'd do a thorough market research before deciding what make and model to buy. Most important of all (I think) - the player (firmware) has to be easy to upgrade, and made by a manufacturer that will still be there tomorrow...

You're wrong there, mate. You can get done for piracy in the UK.
