  1. Ok, here is what I got

    Sony DRU-510A

Veritas DVD Burning software (came with dvd burner)

various forms of Media > Imation, Memorex, and Sonic <<All 4x I Believe

I am sending out some independent work I have done and burned to DVD's to various parts of the country.

I can watch the DVD all the way through on my computer and not have a problem, and also on an X-Box console

Someone called today and said he watched it and it started skipping around and then it eventually just stopped playing and locked up his player

Now I tried the same thing today, and sure enough it started to skip around. and even locked up once.

I took it out and put it back in and had no problems for now.

What could be casuing this? He said he tried it in several different players (including computers) and had the same results.

What do you think could be causing this?

Could it be a wide spread issue?

Another person said her Sony DVD Player reported it as a "dirty or scratched disc" and would not play it at all.

I can't tell you what your problem is but I can tell you that I had a similar problem with a DVD lately. One of the chapters would cause skipping then freeze up the player. So I demuxed (I think that's the right term) the files back into MPEGs in TMPGEnc DVD Author then created a brand new DVD using those files with no problem.

    Hmmm.. interesting.

What is the file I "take" from the DVD I made to change it to an MPEG file?

  4. Did you apply a label to any of these discs? Applying a CD/DVD label to a DVD-R will cause some imbalance which will result in skipping and freezing.

Then I have 500 discs that are out of balance but wait none of them skip LOL.

    Yes, to all of them

    Interesting suggestion-

Is it possible this could be causing the issue? Hmmmm

Now, most of the copies I have watched here play OK. Of course they are WITHOUT labels.

But the one i tried today WITHOUT a label demonstrated the same symptoms the one person told me they had today.

So maybe it's not the label that is the problem

It just seems weird that it plays alright sometimes, and NOT alright other times.

So, i am doing to stray away from the label idea. But bases on the fact that I had one without a label do the same thing, what do you think?

Thanks so much for the input. I am putting all my thouhts down here to try and make sense of it all

IF I were to NOT put labels on them in the future, how could I decorate the fronts of the DVD's?

Either it's bad media, or the authoring program (never heard of an authoring program causing this) - or, it could be the labels.

My money is on bad media.

    Imation, Memorex, and Sonic
None of these brands is a particularly good brand.

I have seen labels cause these types of problems. There is a very thin clear type of label that works well for labeling...but I just use a black sharpie.

For the record I think you are dealing with a media issue.

I can watch the DVD all the way through on my computer and not have a problem, and also on an X-Box console
This would imply that it is not the burning process, since the information is on the disc...that means it was there, their players just couldn't read it...typically video skipping is a media issue.

Buy some RitekG04 media. I bet that solves your problem.

Well, all you have to do is open TMPGEnc DVD Author, start a new project, then right click on the video area (or whatever it's called) and "add DVD video" to the project. It'll demux (?) the video and save it as MPEG files on your HD.

Thanks. I'm just really lucky that my half-assed attempts at things actually work.

  11. I have that same drive and I can tell you that your media is causing the problem.

if you burn at 4x on memorex disks, the video will skip and become pixelated. if you continue to burn with those disks, then try to slow down your burn speed to 1x or 2x.

If your computer's DVD drive can read these DVD discs without any issues (which appears to be the case from what you wrote) then simply use DVD Decrypter to "rip" an ISO IMAGE FILE to your HDD then write that back out to another disc.

Try Taiyo-Yuden DVD-R discs. They are the highest quality you can get ... better than Ritek G04 blanks.

You can buy Taiyo-Yuden DVD-R discs direct from some on-line stores or you can find them in retail stores (at least in the USA) under the FUJI brand name (but only the FUJI packs labeled MADE IN JAPAN ... some FUJI packs say MADE IN TAIWAN and those are NOT Taiyo-Yuden brand).

Since it appears to be a MEDIA issue you might as well use the BEST media there is because IF you STILL have the same problem ... then you know it can't possibly be the MEDIA.

Just out of curiosity, why would an ISO IMAGE FILE be better than the AUDIO/VIDEO TS Folders? I have no problem with either, but just wondering.

Well someone suggested demultiplexing the VOB files into MPEG files (or a M2V and a AC-3/MP2/PCM) but that is much too much work ... if the problem really is only media related YET the DVD drive on the computer has no problem reading the disc in question then the simple easy thing to do is RIP it as an ISO IMAGE FILE and then BURN that ISO IMAGE FILE back to a new blank DVD of better quality.

To do this all you need is DVD Decrypter.

One step rip and one step burn.

If you just copied the VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD to the HDD then you couldn't use DVD Decrypter to burn unless you make an ISO IMAGE FILE first with ImgTools and that doesn't make any sense.
