  1. Hi,
I tried searching for the answer to this question. Sorry if it has been covered and I missed it.

I have a Verbatim 2.4X DVD+RW that has been working well for about a year. I just purchased some Imation DVD+R media, however I noticed that the boxes say 4X DVD+R media on them.

Question: Will these disks work in in 2.4X drive, or should I take them back?

I've read some posts about updating firmware, but have not been able to find any specific links/instruction for the verbatim drive. Of course, I'd love to have the burner work faster, on the other hand it's working fine now, and I'd hate to screw it up with a firmware upgrade gone bad

I'd appreciate any help or comments.
    cheers!

I believe that they should work fine. I know that I have burned 4x at 2.4x by mistake, but the disk worked fine. It was a Verbatim +R.

By the way, I would seriously consider doing the firmware upgrade. It usually is not complicated and will almost double your speed..

  3. hmmmm....if I crack the package open and the disks dont work I'll be SOL!
Anyway, maybe I'll try it. what could happen? 4X disks won't be recognized at all or not burn properly?
I agree that moving to 4X firmware sounds enticing. I need to find the correct files for it though. Verbatim.com doesn't even have link for their DVD burners Did they stop selling burners?!
    any ideas?

  4. Your drive is either a Ricoh5125 or a Nec1000 inside.
    (as Verbatim's link shows: http://www.v-pgi.com/Downloads.htm )
However I would not flash it with those ones because they are already outdated.

To identify your drive, first tell us the current firmware version.

  5. well you are correct. My drive is an NEC ND1000A
I am not sure if this is the correct firmware, but does v.1.01 sound like it might be a firmware ID?
Anyway, I did try the 4X media. What the heck and it worked!
Still though, I wouldn't mind upgrading the firmware to a faster speed.
Knowing the drive is a NEC ND1000A, can you point me to the correct firmware upgrade?
    thanks

You are lucky because the Nec1000 hardware is identical to the 1100 (4xburner).
I hear they flash Nec1000's to Nec1100 with no probs
