  1. I was wondering what is the fastest anyone has made a direct copy. I have made copies at 2x with no errors. Has anyone been able to do it at 4x. I am using Sony500a (2.0g) & LiteOn 166. Just wanted to know the success rate, if any.

Yeah, the slower the burn speed the less chance of burning error. My Nero version uses Burn Proof so the recorder actually slows down or actually stops if the buffer drops to low. I have also done a 2x direct copy. I also tried with perfect results to back up a DVD with ANyDVD running in the background, using Nero Recode. It burned it as it was being ripped and shrunk!!!! Pretty damn amazing me thinks.
No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD!

  3. My best times was 4x, disd-to-disk with my SonyDRU500, Sony DRU510 and BTCDRW1008IM. I have done this many times, simply because I could not yet find and 8x media for my BTC. But as usual, a few laws that does not like to be bent.
(1)Do not have the DVD-ROM and DVD-RW on the same IDE. I had it like that, an I could not even copy at 1x!
(2)Make sure your computer has enough RAM, and make sure the writing program(like Nero) uses it.
    (3) Almost the same as RAM - DO NOT TRY THIS ON A 286 MACHINE ! ! ! Just kidding, but the faster the computer, the easier it is to copy at faster speeds. I could not get 4x with a 500hz P3, but it was a breeze with a 2Gh Celeron.
The way things are going now, I foresee that at at the end of this year, somebody will be asking the same question about copying DVD at 24x...

  4. Thanks for the feedback fellows. Just wanted to see what the result were. I'm running Athon XP 1.4, 512 ram. I think I should be OK.

  5. See how fast you can read the source disc with something like CD Speed - that will give you your maximum direct copy speed without relying on buffer under-run protection and the like.

Most discs I've run this on start at just below 4x, so if you were trying to burn at 4x you would either need a good sized buffer or buffer under-run protection to stop from making a coaster.

As you get nearer the edge the speed tends to increase, but just be aware that a lot of drives will have trouble sustaining read speeds on recordable media anywhere near their rated speed - 8x would certainly be pushing it for most people.

The old adage is you need to be able to read at 2.5 times your record speed to allow for re-reads and error correction. I think this is a bit high, unless you've got a really crappy disc or drive you shouldn't have that many problems, but don't expect to write at say 4x if the average data rate coming off the source drive isn't above that by a moderate margin.

  6. Once again - true! I forgot about that one. My DVD-ROM ticks off at just over 7x.

Hmm... that spells tough times for the upcoming 8x trail...

I have found that I get a better result using Alcohol 120 as opposed to Nero. Also, do not do anything else whilst the disk is writing. You will get errors. I even shut down Norton etc when doing disc to disc.
