  1. What do you recon?

What sort of free space on my HD would I need to successfully convert one to the other?

I am a newbie so need any advice possible.

    Many thanks, Tzobal

  2. When I was a newbie, the easiest way was:

    1. rip with Smart Ripper
    2. convert to AVI with DVD2AVI (save project)
    3. edit/split discs using VirtualDub
    4. encode using Tmpgenc
    5. burn with VCDeasy

There are plenty of guides that walk you through the process. All are free software. I forget how much drive space it took, but you can figure 5-10 gigs just to rip the DVD. Add a gig and a half for your encoded VCD(s), and another gig (maybe two) for whatever else.

    Good luck.

    Hi tzamroor,

Check out DVD2SVCD - an all in one app (well, almost - you just need one of 2 encoders, details on the "Tools" page), and it's freeware.

I've seen loads of people swear by it.
There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

    Carpe diem.

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room.

I agree with dphirschler - There's nothing that can beat that path from DVD to SVCD. You need: Up to 9 GB for the ripped DVD and an additonal 2*800 MB for each CD you split it over (once for the mpg, once for the CD image). Add a GB or two for audio in wav format too.
All in all 13 -14 GB would be fine.
