  1. Being a bit of a noob please bear with me.

I am trying to capture DV through a firewire card. The Cam gets recognised and everything seems to be going ok until I try to change any capture settings or start to capture at which point whatever application I am using freezes. It stays frozen until I switch the camera back off.

I'm using XP as my OS and have tried using several different applications (Adobe Premier, Ulead Video studio, MGI videowave) to capture, all with the same result.

I have checked that there are no conflicts, updated drivers and reinstalled the firewire card all with negative results.

I am now at a bit of a loss as to what to try next?

In case it helps this is the system I am using.

    XP2400+, ASUS A7V333 (MB), 1Gb DDR PC2700 RAM, ATI 9800 PRO AIW, Hercules DigiFire 7.1, Pioneer 106 DVDRW, 2 x 80 Gb HDD.

I would first try to capture using the most simple DV capture program DVIO. If it still freezes, try these adobe tips (adobe Premiere can cause problems with some OHCI compliant firewire cards)
    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/2b67e.htm
    Possibly uninstall adobe premiere.
    If no changes,
The this should rule out most software conflicts.

  3. Thanks Redman,

Downloaded DVIO and still the same problem, end up with Not responding.

Removed Premiere and still the same problem.

I have also tried disabling everything I can on my PC, Sound Card, CD, DVD etc and got the same problem.

You say the camera gets recognized. After connecting the cam, go to control panel, then system, then device manager and find the camera there and see how its listed. This is to make sure the camera is being recognized correctly. I have a Sony DVcam that will occasionally be loaded as "61338 device" instead of DVCam. This is a problem with windows drivers but still worth a look.

Are you capturing through your camera from a VCR, or are you transferring a MiniDV tape to your harddrive??

  6. Is your 1394 port on the sound card? If so, try removing it and replacing it with an inexpensive 1394 card. If that works, re-install sound card and disable the port on it.

  7. Redman: - it comes up as Sony DVcam

pijetro: - I'm transferring a mini DV tape

Nelson37: - I have both a 1394 card and a port on the sound card, I am currently using the card and have got the sound card port disabled.

There have been 1 or 2 advances, last night I mangaged to get the cam to start capturing, left it running and 20 mins later it stopped and said that it could not connect with camera, this leads me to believe that it is a dodgy connection somewhere (cable, PCI slot etc.)

Thanks for the advice already given and PLEASE keep it coming.

  8. Disabled doesn't always mean disabled. Test each card seperately, with the other removed. You have tried a different cable and ideally a different source?

  9. I have tried a different cable but I do not have a different source to try.
