  1. Can someone translate in noob english please:

-pri / -sec: Here you specify whether your drive is connected to the 'primary' or 'secondary' IDE-controller on your mainboard.

-mas / -sla: Here you specify whether your drive is connected (configured by the jumper) as either 'master' or 'slave'.

I have an external NEC 1300A dvd burner, which one would it be classified under?

  2. I am assuming you're in your Bios and that is where you got what you want translated.

Your motherboard, that big circuit board with the processor and memory attached, has two 'IDE controllers'. Each IDE controller can connect two two devices. What I mean by devices, Hard Drive, CD-Rom Drive, DVD Drive, DVD Burner, etc. So you can have a total of 4 devices.

As an example, typically a store bought computer will usually have the hard drive connected to Primary IDE, and a CD Rom to the Secondary IDE.

This leaves room for two more devices. Lets say you buy a DVD burner. You have the option of connecting it to the Primary IDE controller, where your hard drive is connected, or the Secondary IDE controller, where you CD Rom is connected.

I would chose the Secondary controller, as I don't like anything attached with my hard drive, unless it's a secondary hard drive.

Because I now have two devices connected to the Secondaty IDE controller, I need to designate one as the Master and the second as the slave.

This is done by moving the jumpers (the little plastic piece) on the back of the device. The link below is an example using a second hard drive:

If you set everything to Auto the Bios will figure out where everything is connected.
