I'm in no way asking for them or asking you to reveal anything you don't want to reveal. It's just a simple question submitted to me as a poll.

  2. If you visit a website often, you should either click on the ads or donate something. What's $5?

  3. Interesting poll. It does get you thinking. However, I disagree that everyone that spends time here is obligated to donate.

What's $5? It's lunch for me.. for two days if I stretch it (maybe even three if I eat Taco Bell).

I just donated again, and was promised a peepshow that would make Janet Jackson blush!! Okay, not really!

Obligated? No. But is it all-round good karma? Definitely. I've donated in the past, and I've gotten my money's worth and then some.

Yeah, I've donated twice, but I couldn't afford to pay what I truly owe to this site

tgpo, my real dad, told me to make a maximum of 5,806 posts on vcdhelp.com in one lifetime. So I have.

    No, you're absolutely right.

No, not everyone should donate. But if you find yourself visiting a website often for information you should consider it. Otherwise, websites like this will cease to exist...or resort to popups...or track you down and steal your car...or send Vinnie over to "have a little talk". :P

I donated for the first time because of this poll idea. I will again. as I said in my note to tgpo, it has saved me (and earned me) hundreds if not thousands. (and hours, and as we know, time is $)

Man, in the two years since I found this site I've earned circa. £40 ($70) as a result.
But you could knock £200 off that for all the free camcorder to DVD conversion's I've done for close friends and family.
I hope your donation is in keeping with the thousands you've earned!

  11. Haven't donated money because I don't have that much to give, instead I give my time (I know, its not worth that much :P ) moderating and also designed the short film contest website (now if only it could start).

Just seems that over the past year there's been a shift away from video stuff to questions that could be answered by a simple search, questions that want the 'best' as opposed to knowing 'why' or 'how', questions about one touch programs and useless guides.

I think last thread that really got people thinking en mass was the one about Will Hay's ADVC problems.

Comes to something when the biggest thread on a video forum is one about word association
    Regards,

  15. There is a thread on this forum, probably archived by now, about the VCDEasy creators having hundreds of thousands of downloads but only a handful of donations. I was so appalled by this it bothered me for a couple of days. This was right about the time I started posting here. I told myself I would donate every month that I remained active; that VCDEasy thing really bothered me.

I donate $20 per month to dvdrhelp.com. I'm not always timely in my donations but I'm up-to-date with my personal promise to myself.

    So true.

As much money as I thrown into this hobby and others, people get a good laugh that I shop with coupons. Saving $1 on a 12-pack of Coca-Cola means something to me.

  16. Forgive my ignorance but mrmungus wrote "If you visit a website often, you should either click on the ads or donate something." (I don't even know how to put the quotes in those boxes. ) Does clicking on the ads really help to pay for the site? I was a little embarassed that I didn't contribute, but if accessing the ads helps then maybe I have contributed more than I thought.

I have an interesting question(which I hope hasn't been asked in this thread yet....imagine my embarassment).
What is the highest donation this site ever received by a single person?....seriously...no exaggerations now.

I've just donated for the first time, and personally I do like the karma factor...

However, I look at it from several angles (multi-angle? sorry, couldn't resist the pun):

    1) I have leared a hell of a lot from this web site.

    2) Between the guides, the reviews, and the nifty lil' SEARCH button on the forums, I have saved countless hours of frustration and failure.

    3) This site has saved me far more money than donating costs. Again, the forum discussions and reviews have helped me make intelligent buying decisions on hardware and software.

    4) It was this site that got me thinking about the value of converting my home movies to DVD. Along the way, I've had a chance to re-kindle some memories from watching these old tapes that might otherwise have faded. Again, the cost of a donation or three is very small in perspective.

That's my take on it -- thanks for a great site, Baldrick!

  24. ..just a little time - mostly helping out with hardware issues by email. I click on the adverts on a regular basis and have bought a little bit of stuff as well. I agree with rhegedus about the decline in the signal to noise ratio here. It is a pity as this site is friendly and less elitist than the other boards.

    I agree, and disagree
It's a good release sometimes, and as a result of threads like these I've built up many (online) friends (yes, I know, they're not 'real' friends but they're my online family ).
I don't know of another forum like it, and as it's so appealing to come here I'm more likely to help out in the video areas I do know about.

  28. wow, i have donated before in the past, but with my funds in general im just usually getting by, i would still like to donate more in the future. I was just really suprised to see that on the poll only around 16% have donated, then again i do have to consider that everyone is not going to be taking this poll

That bothers me, too. I donate to people who create shareware, too. Maybe because I'm running a "free" service myself. Mainly because if you don't donate, there's a lot less incentive for developers. What really bothers me is people who don't pay for software that they "love".
