  1. I can usually figure out how to solve a problem just by browsing the forums or guides, but this new error I got tonight really has me stumped.

I'm trying to add subtitles to an xvid, via a virtualdub filter, and then frameserve it to tmpgenc for conversion. Easy enough, done it a thousand times. Well, here's the catch... when I try to open it in tmpgenc, I get the old "file not supported" routine. Fine. I open the file in tmpgenc directly to see if it's just a bad file. Nope, loads just fine by itself. So then I say to myself, "must be bad subs eh"? Nope. I loaded another file in vdub (a divx this time) and added the same subs to see if tmpgenc would have any problems with it. It opened fine. So, by this point I'm fuming... it's as if the programs are laughing at my frustration. So, on one last try, I open a different xvid file in vdub, add the subs, and try to open it in tmpgenc. Bingo, no dice.

So, it seems to me that my problem is that tmpgenc will not recognize a frameserved xvid for some weird reason. I have all the codecs, so that's not an issue. I even seem to remember subbing an xvid or two way back, so I'm not sure what the deal is now. I tried to trick tmpgenc by using FourCC code changer on the files, but with no luck. Seriously, if anyone has some advice or input on this, by all means.... I'm at my wit's end here.

(edit: oh, and I didn't notice I posted this in advanced 'till it was too late, so if any mods feel like it doesn't belong here and wants to move it, be my guest)

  2. I don't think it's your xvid per se as I've frameserved with Vdub to TmpgEnc quite a bit and I only use xvid. It could be your fourcc code - I use 'DX50' and that seems to work with everything. Although I'm not convinced about that because, as I understand it , by the time the video gets to TpmgEnc it's uncompressed by Vdub and therefore TmpgEnc doesn't know what the format of the original file was. I'm sure someone will prove me wrong on that though!

  3. Actually, could you believe that all of this was caused by something as simple as the name of the frameserver? Such simple solutions to such mammoth problems never cease to boggle the mind.

  4. I was having all sorts of problems frameserving from Virtualdub to TMPGENC. After reviewing all the guides on this site, I was still not able to frameserve reliably. It was frustrating, as there seemed to be no consistency in what files I could frameserve and what ones I couldn't. After many months of playing around with settings in TEMPGENC, I accidentally found that long file names were the culprit. By using "avi" and "vdr" file names that were only four characters long, I was able to frameserve every single file that had previously given me problems.

Hopefully your problem is this easy to solve .

  5. Darkwunder - you just saved me from lots of frustration!!!!!!

I frameserve from virtualdub to CCE in Win XP. It always worked fine.

Yesterday, I installed the trial version of Ulead DVD Workshop 3. Suddenly frameserving is no longer working. I blamed it on the Ulead software. Was I wrong!

I was just lucky to read your message. I'm doing this stuff for years now but it is the first time that I used such a long name for the frameserver. I never thought this would corrupt frameserving. I tried with a shorter name and all works fine again!

Your post was like a gift from heaven. Yeeeehaaa!!!!

    Thanx a lot!!!!

  6. Error correction!

Yesterday, I installed the trial version of Ulead DVD Workshop 3.
This should read: Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3. (Nice piece of software for quick authoring).

    Sorry!
