  1. Has anyone had any experience with this OS? I've heard that it was designed with video/audio editing in mind. Since the personal edition is now free and OpenBeOS is in the works, I'm wondering if it would be worth the effort to download and install it. I don't plan to completely replace Windows anytime soon, but OpenBeOS sounds like it might one day be a better alternative than Linux or OpenBSD.
When did the word "beer-drinking" become an insult anyhow? I get these letters that start out, "Why don't you and your beer-guzzling buddies go and . . ." It takes YEARS of practice to guzzle. What's so dang wrong with it?

  2. You better start off with BeOS Max Edition, it's based on BeOS free edition, but has updates included that would take a long, long time to locate and install.

You can find it at: http://sourceforge.net/projects/crux/

It's a ISO image that you can burn with Nero, or CDRWin (easier with Nero)

Trying to use OpenBeOS with no experience will just leave you frustrated. This version will give you an idea of how the OS is supposed to work.

By the way, there is also small ISO available that will run off the CD without install. (Wait a minute.....it looks like there are two Mini versions)

  3. Thanks a lot for the info. I'll try that first.

Many years ago, I bought BeOS v.5 pro, it was a good little OS but didn't have much in the way of supported applications. Too bad it died as it showed some good possibilities, and also supported multi processors. I'll have to check out the open project and see where it is going, thanks for the info.

Decided to bring this back to the top.

Stumbled onto something interesting. While doing a search for frr OS's, found a link that said some people have continued with the work that BE had started, and that they had a similar "main stream" OS based on BeOS. Anyway here is the link:

    http://www.yellowtab.com/

Just wish it was a little cheaper, even the educational discount is making my blink before purchase.

On a side note, I think I am going to set up a Be proxy server at work to do some url filtering. Seems like it should be cheap and work well enough for what I need to do. Basically it needs to block everything except one or two web sites. Those being freedb.com and cddb so that we can get info from music CDs when they are ripped into the system for later playback on a radio station.

  6. I've looked at that "YellowTab" quite a bit. There was an article Linked off the "BeBits.com" page that explained how they can legally develop BeOS.

Supposedly, YellowTab worked out a deal with BeOS before its "Intellectual Property" was sold to Palm. This could mean that the first YellowTab will be the last YellowTab. I guess it depends on the details of the "deal".
