  1. I recently ripped a DVD. Near the end of the process, both DVD Decrypter and Smartripper gave read errors. However, I was able to get all main title VOBs copied to HD. While trying to open them in DVD-Shrink, I got an error stating VOB 8 was missing (there were only 7 VOBs on the disc according to WinXP Explorer). I then tried to reauthor the files in TMPGEnc DVD Author but it gave error messages as well and would not import the files. Apparently, something is telling these programs there is another VOB file.

I took what little investigative skills I had and opened the main movie IFO in IFOEdit. All the information caused my head to spin and blood to pour from my ears. So, I thought maybe it's in the VOB somewhere. I decided to give VOBedit a try. There was no reference to an eighth VOB, which leads me to believe it's in the IFO somewhere.

I'm trying to avoid running them through an encoder since I have to shrink the disc anyway. If anyone has a suggestion on what I need to do, I would really appreciate it.

  2. read errors..

You might try giving the source disk a thorough (correct) cleaning. One fingerprint into the data area can cause read errors...

If you got their IFO too (as highlighted on the pic) then create the missing navigation files with DVD Fab and you're good to go.
    "Create Videomanager"
(Delete the rest of the files first)

PS If those main VOBs (and the IFO) are not in the first titleset then rename them before creating the missing files

  4. rcb: Thanks. Still gave the same read errors.

tompika: Gave it a try. Unfortunately, not only did it not fix the VOB problem, it also created unusable VIDEO_TS.xxx files. Appreciate the suggestion though.

Looks like it's going be a run through the decoder. Drat!
