    Hi, guys:
I tried to convert avi into divx using Virtual Dub, as described on several guides here (e.g. dvdrhelp.com/avi2divx.htm)
VDub did not accept any of my avi files, giving a message to the effect that only "video for windows" files are accepted. It did take files, though, which were on a CD that came with one book I bought, but it was of no use to me. (I capture with Premiere 6.0, and have no problem with feeding those avi files into TMPGEnc).
I was able to do divx conversion with a DV app called Xymorph. It is essentially the same operation as with VDub - a divx encoder is called via the shell of that app and it produces a divx file. I only had to change the extension to .divx, as the default is somehow "avi".
I would like to know if this method allows to control basic encoding parameters - bitrate, fps. On one of my movies I am just a few Mb over the CD limit, squeezing it just a little would make it fit nicely.
    Thx wh

You can probably safely burn up to 705mb using overburn. Depending on the media up to 710mb. Your only other option is re-encoding with a lower video bitrate. You can probably get away with just using half the audio bitrate too if it's only a few megs over 700.

.avi is the default extension for divx and xvid (mpeg4)
most new burners support overburn. On good media I've burnt up to734mg with overburn.
d/l Avicodec (from the tools section)and load your file into it and check the audio and video info. Avicodec will tell you the video and audio format and if you have the proper codecs installed. I would d/l Virtual dub mpeg (a mod of virtual dub). This mod allows you to use mpeg files also.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I will try ovberburn for this particular movie, but after a certain point I have to be able to reduce the bitrate or fps in order to reduce the file size. The problem is - there is no GUI for that divx codec, when it is called through, say, VDdub or Xymorph. So how do I reduce the bitrate /fps?
    Thx wh

    In Vdub click
    video
fast recompress (unless you want to add filters)
    compression
    click divx
    configure
this will allow you to adjust the settings ie bitrate how many passes

    Thanks, Tigerman:
I'll try that with a vfw avi file, so far VDub was rejecting my avi clips, that is why I switched to Xymorph.
