  1. I have an IBM model t23 thinkpad with a cd-rw/dvd CD installed and my son just sent me his old IBM thinkpad 760el with a 6x CDROM installed.

I used the supplied software on my t23 (IBM Record now -veritas) to copy some files to a CD ( I tried both a cd/r and cd/rw type - 700 mb capacity and reduced the record speed to 2x) that I wanted to transfer to my sons computer. When I put the CD I ccreated on the T23 in the cd drive on my sons computer I get a not ready message. I made sure that the device was seated properly and put a CD in that I for Quicken and it was able to be read with no problem. One last observation is that I tried reading the CD created on the T23 on a new computer at Staples and it was able to be read.

Any idea what is happening here? Are the media formats incompatilbe, is it that the older type (my sons in this case) cd drives are not capable of reading the 700 meg format? A ny thoughts/observations would be appreciated.

  2. Was it an overburned disc? Mine won't read anything over 700Mb

  3. It is possible that an older laptop drive will not read CD-R or CD-RW discs. I have an older Hitachi that won't read either format, only pre-pressed CD-ROMs.

Thanks.. In some instances I only copied 1 file (to test) so overburn was not a factor. I believe I know what the problem is. Based on another reply to this forum which mentioned pressed CD's I checked out the following web sites --(which you might be interested in) and I am fairly sure the problem is that the cdrom in the 760el can only read pressed cd's and not burned dvd cd-r/rw types.

Thanks, based on your info on pressed cdrom I searched the internet using PRESSED as a search argurment and found the following websites
    Http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq01.html
    http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq02.html#S2-2

And based on what I read concerning the method used to write versus pressed I believe you have hit the nail on the head. To confirm I send an e-mail to the site author this morning and hopefully I will get a reply.

Thanks again and I found the websites very informative on CD related faqs so you may want to bookmark them.

Thank God Al Gore created the internet
