playback not smooth on standalone or pc

Hi
I am having problems with movie playback avi/mpg.
When i play them using wmp the video playback is not smooth, even after conversion from avi to mpeg, burned to disk and played on my stand alone dvd player it has the same fault. The audio is fine but the video seems to jump forward slightly more noticable during fast scenes.
Has anyone got any ideas before i run out of hair?

My guess would be you have converted ntsc (23.97 fps) to pal (25 fps) this is where the jitter is coming from.

Check your framerates.

If this is the case then do a forum search type "ntsc to pal conversion" and you will get a lot of info to help you convert.

I am talking about files that have not yet been converted ie avi files as downloaded. these jump also during playback.
