Any help with this? I had a generic DVD-Rom drive, and an LG-4040B burner. The burner was burning Ritek -R G04's at 4X with no problems. I decided to get the Lite On XJ-HD166S because I wanted to increase my ripping speed for DVD backing purposes. After installing the Lite On, my ripping speeds increased MASSIVELY.......BUT, my BURNING speeds have DECREASED! Now, when I burn on Ritek G04's, they will not burn any faster than 2x. This was not an issue when I had the generic burner in place of the Lite On. Anybody know how I can fix this problem so I can burn at 4x again? ANY help would be appreciated!

A few things to check -
Burner as Master, ripper as slave
DMA is still on the burner ?

See if those two ideas help. If not, post back

Very interesting. I just checked, and the new ripper drive is set at dma ultra mode 2, and the LG-4040b is running in PIO mode. I have it set to use dma mode if available, but for some odd reason, it's using pio mode, and there's no setting to change it to dma mode. How do I fix this?

Right click on the MY COMPUTER icon. Go down to properties and left click.
Go to HARDWARE then DEVICE MANAGER-
Click on the IDE CONTROLLERS and expand them.
    Go to PRIMARY or SECONDARY.
Click on properties, ADVANCED SETTINGS and set to DMA if AVAILABLE.

    REBOOT

Dude, you're not going to believe this. I tried your trick, and it didn't work. The drive was still going slow. Then I searched the web for a few minutes, found the below link, tried it (the message left by the member "mangotangoe"), and it WORKED! I tell ya, you learn something new EVERY DAY with computers. Now the burner is working fine. It's burning at 4x again. Simply amazing. For anyone that has this problem, I suggest you check out the below link (read the message posted by "mangotangoe") and give it a try.

P.S. Thanks JTommyJ for getting back to me and trying to help me out with this issue.....

  8. I had a similar problem...XP decided to switch my DVD ROM drive to PIO from UDMA Mode2 while my dvd burner on the same Secondary IDE channel remained at UDMA Mode 2. Uninstalling the Secondary IDE channel, then scanning for hardware changes or rebooting would reset the ROM drive to UDMA mode 2 for a while, maybe reading 1/2 of a disk. Then out of nowhere, XP switched the ROM back to PIO.

I did a Google search and found out that when XP has trouble reading a disk, it may switch the drive to PIO mode. I ran a disk cleaner and the problem disappeared.

Hope this helps someone cuz PIO mode really sux.

Dude, this "switch" happened when I installed my Lite on 166s rom. All of a sudden after that, everytime I burned ripped files, the burner was taking 30 to 40 minutes to finish! It was driving me nuts! I couldn't figure out what I did wrong! I thought I installed the lite on wrong or something, so I re-installed it, and the same problem occured. I'm glad that this board exists so people can help each other out with these kinds of problems. As of now, my burner is burning at 4x again. It hasn't jumped back to PIO mode, and hopefully, it WON'T!
