  1. I tried to copy the _TS directories to the DVD but my Home Theater DVD player doesn't like that. What programs allow you to take VOB files on the hard drive and write them properly to the DVD. I would need this to make backups of my DVD's and also if I've used DVDShrink to shrink a project.

I have a Plextor DVD-ROM and a Plextor PX-708A Burner, so can I easily make backups of my DVD's? Another question is: Some DVD's I have are way over 4.7GB (the total of the VOB files). How can this be?

This forum has been invaluable during my struggle to transfer my 8mm and MiniDV tapes to DVD.

You need to author these files as a DVD.

merely dropping .vob files into a VIDEO_TS fodler and burning them is not a standard dvd.

do some searching for dvdauthoring apps and you will be able to see what is necessary to get these files authored properly so you can burn them and watch them

if you have the other dvd files (.ifo's and .bup's)
then perhaps you can drop them into a VIDEO_TS folder and burn the fodler as you would any dvd.

  3. Yes but how else would I run DVDShrink on the files if I can't put them on disk first? Some of my DVD's are way over 4.7GB.

To answer your question about why the total size of the files is way bigger than 4.7GB...Many commercial DVDs are on dual layer discs. This means they can hold roughly twice the data that a DVDR will hold. If you are trying to back up your cammercial DVDs, they also probably have copy protection. To remove the copy protection and make the files fit on one dvd, I recommend using DVD shrink. After your finished using shrink, you can burn the files with nero. To learn more about the whole process, click

and do to the DVD Rip section. There you will find many guides to rip a dvd-9 (dual layer pressed dvd) to a dvdr.

IFOEDIT can create the four basic ifo files you need. Just be sure the vob's are numbered VTS_01_1.VOB,etc.
With the ifo files created you can open in DVD Shrink and compress them to 4.37GB's.
