  1. I need to convert a small AVI file extracted from my set-top DVD recorder to a format I can burn on a CD-R with the confidence that any computer I play it on will work. I made an MPG file which played fine at home, but apparently my computer has DivX codec, and when my wife tried to play the file on the computer in her Lecture Room at Rutgers University, only the audio track worked, no video!! What codec is best for a "stock" computer using windows 9x? Which conversion tool can I get for my WinXP computer that will output files that can be played by all unmodified computers? thanx....joisey

You have confused MPEG with AVI, I think. DivX is an AVI codec. It is very common and popular, but has to be downloaded once to be available.

I think the only decent video coding playable in all computers (with no extra codecs installed) would be MPEG 1. You can use Tmpgenc to encode any AVI to MPEG1
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
