Had massive problems with ati drivers and Adobe premier pro and decided to reinstall the entire system, even bought a new xp pro disk with sp1a included

The sytem now takes 3 times longer to boot and I lose all user settings and favorites ever time I reboot ? Its like im a new user everytime i reboot ??

    This one beats me ?

it sounds like a bad install many things could cause this it may be quicker to reinstall the os from scratch !!!

But whats causing it ? well its hard to tell without a lot more info on ur system but id remove all hardware not needed just install with the mobo (Doh) cpu, ram, vid card and HD, CD-rom and go for it from there then when youve got your OS on then reinstall your hardware one at a time

Did you clean install or upgrade ??? ...
It appears that the CPU was operating so fast that it began to execute instructions before they arrived. This execution of future instructions created a small tear in space-time itself through which part of the cpu passed into a parallel universe

  3. Thanks for the quick reply.
It was a clean install with mimimum hardware, then hardware and drivers were added afterwards.

Im going to try system restore and see what happens.................

  4. Update :

I think this is ATI driver related !
Did a system restore last night and went back 5 steps, the 5 steps are in order below,

1: restore point when xp claimed "ntoskrnl.exe is missing from /system32/"

    2: Your application name
    3: Your application name
    4:Your application name
    5: DTS console installed

After restoring to the point previous to no:5 my user settings are now saved and reboot is much quicker. I do not know what the restore points mean but I think there is definitely an ati application in there somewhere. I had also unchecked "load on startup and always on top" for the mmc launcher (before restore), so its now back on the desktop and seems to be working.

Two other things to note - I have 2 users, ' mick ' and ' ASP.NET MACHINE A.....', mick is me created during xp install and the other one should be me again as admin ?

The other thing is this, I had terrible problems installing xp pro last night (brand new cd) and someone on another I.T. forum told me to disable acpi by pressing f6 or f7 during install. This worked but I now have no advanced power management, im not bothered as long as it doesnt affect system performance ??

Anyway, if anyone can suggest any tests that i can make to proove the insatll is working ok I would really appreciate it.

    Regards

p.s. I still dont know how to find out which version of "catalyst" my ati card is using ?
