  1. hello all
i used dvdshrink to backup a movie, it put it on the hard drive OK
and burned it OK but when i tried to make a second copy off the HD
it fails, so i tried to make it using Nero but it also fails with a Calibration error can someone tell me what this power calibration error is. I have had a few failures, I am using princo disks with a NEC 1300A.
What is the usual failure rate
Does dvd shrink use Nero when it actually does the burning.

    Thanks Steve

  2. Try using the search function above !

It means the recorder couldn't find a suitable power level for the laser to write to the disc reliably.

It usually means you've got crappy media or your recorder doesn't know how to write to it because it's not in it's firmware look-up table.

  4. Try different media. Many online sellers do not recommend Princo discs for use with the NEC 1300.

  5. From the Pioneer web site FAQs:

    What is Power Calibration error.

A power calibration error is caused by the inability of a DVD-RW drive to use a DVD-R or DVD-RW disk.

DVD-R and DVD-RW disks themselves have information written on them, within this Media ID code there is information that the drive uses to calibrate itself to the disk, when a drive first starts to write to a disk it will burn a small amount of data to a calibration area on the disc, using the calibration information in the Media ID code, and then try to read back the data that it has written. If it cannot be read, then disk will be ejected and fail with a power calibration error.

A power calibration error is normally caused by problems with the media. Should you be experiencing problems with your drive or the media, we recommend that a disk from a good quality manufacturer be used to test it.

For fault finding purposes we recommend the use of a disk of a known high quality, we recommend disks from:

    Pioneer Video Corporation
    TDK Corporation
    Hitachi Maxell
    Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (Verbatim)
    Taiyo-Yuden Co. LTD
    Matsushita Electric
    Industrial Co.,LTD (Panasonic)
    Sony Corporation

  6. I had a similar problem with an HP CD burner. It worked flawlessly for about 2 years then I started getting 'Power Calibration' errors. Generally, it became 'Power Calibration Area Full'.

I determined that the laser was burning out. In its try to find the correct level, it would use the whole calibration area rendering the disc useless.

I had to get another burner and everything returned to ok. I guess they do eventually wear out. How old is yours?
