Memorex 4X + burns at 8X with the proper firmware and can be read in most/all dvd players.

    hope this helps

  4. Better say "most" - they don't play in mine, but then they are usually made by CMC and that explains a lot...

  5. Ricoh 4X +R discs burn at 8X in my 811S and, using the bitsetting utility, are burned as DVD-ROM discs. This booktype allows them to be played on older players.

If you can get +R Ricoh's and use the bit-setting utility to change the book-type to DVD-ROM you will have the most compatible disc for any stand-alone player.

If you want -R's, I'd go with Grade "A" Riteks.

  9. I would recommend the following. I have used all in my 811s with success.

Fuji DVD-R 4x media buy only the box marked Japan
Taiyo Yuden media will burn at 4x in 811s

Maxell DVD-R media in 15 pack at Office Depot for $26 made in Japan only
Hitachi/Maxell media will burn at 4x in 811s

Verbatin Datalife Plus DVD+R 4x 15 pack at Office Depot $34 made in Singapore only.
Mitsubishi Chemical made media. will burn at 8x in 811s

The RICOH JPNR01-002 DVD+R 4x media sold under the brands of TDK, Memorex and SONY work and will burn at 8x, but I have more errors with this media than the Verbatim listed above. A friend with a 451s also has problems with this media.

I am still trying to buy some certified RITEK 8x DVD+R media, but the two vendors I have bought it from sent the the 4x certified RICOH. Either RITEK or these vendors or both are trying to unload slower media on the US market for a premium price.

If you see RITEK certified 8x media for sale in the US most likely it IS NOT RITEK but RICOH which is made by RITEK under contract. IT is not the same media and you DO NOT want to pay the premium prices they are charging for it.

    I hope this helps.
