What is the advantage of ripping with Decrypter then using Shrink to re-author? I don't understand using them together.

If I am backing up a 2 layer DVD, I use JUST Shrink.

If I am backing up a 1 layer DVD, I use JUST Decrypter: ISO read, ISO write.

I've had very good results using either/or. What am I missing here?

There are some DVDs that DVD Shrink will have problems with ripping. DVD Decrypter is so much advanced and better than DVD Shrink's ripping so it's obvious to use that. Besides, dvdshrink, the author, will tell you to use DD if you have problems anyway. For my personal preference, I ALWAYS use DD.

So, Doubleshadowice, you don't use them together; you use JUST Decrypter.

My question is why are they used TOGETHER when it seems to me that either one OR the other would be simpler.

like the post said above said, some dvds dvdshrink can't rip, so you use dvddecrypter. but you still have to compress in most cases. thats when you have to use dvdshrink, after its ripped by decrypter

I do it for DVD-9s and DVD-5s. Not that it's simpler, it's less stressful for me. I don't even burn with DVD Decrypter. I use ImgTools. I use DVD Decrypter for one reason and that's for ripping only.

I always do DVDdecrypter first so I can play around with the
whole DVD on the HD which is much faster. (for 2 layer)

also deep analysis makes 2 passes which is faster on the HD

also DVDdecrypter gets hard cases better

    Here is what I do:

If the entire DVD fits on one DVD-R without recoding, I use DVDDecrypter.

If I am doing a movie only, and the movie only fits on one DVD-R, I use DVDShrink.

If I have to do any recoding, I use DVDDecrypter to rip whatever I want to the HD, then I use DVDShrink to recode because:

    1. It is usually faster on my system to do it this way.
    2. Sometimes DVDShrink has trouble doing a deep analysis directly from a DVD. It sucks to have it crash at 97%! I have never had the problem when doing a deep analysis from the HD.

I hope this helps a little.

I always use only shrink and then another program to burn since Nero wasn't working for me.

maybe i will look into using dd if its a straight 5 to 5 copy, but who knows.

  9. I always rip with DD then use Shrink after, like FOO said, I decide what I want to do with the project.

If speed is the major issue, then I can understand using both.

But since I don't do as much ripping DVDs as converting VHS to DVD, I haven't noticed a huge difference in speed when using either Decrypter or Shrink to rip just the movie vobs, and they both work equally well for me.

    Thanks for the replies.

There are more ripping options in DD (PUOs, etc).
