  4. Maplins, sell a super cheapy £27.99 (it's there cheapest) and it rips at nearly 10x. You were after just a rom and not a dvd-burner ?

  5. SVP do a cracking Lite-on for about £27.

I've got the 165 and it rips like stink, and reads anything I've put in it to date. I replaced my Matsushita 8586 with this drive and have never looked back.

  7. I posted here recently with the "real" figures, but I'm doing this from memory this time so they may be a little off.

    DVD-R - average 6 - 8x, have seen 12x on rare occasions
SSSL DVD - have seen 16x at the edge of a decent disc, probably 12x av.
    SSDL DVD - average of 7 - 9x sustained, have seen 10 - 12x on occasion.

I made mine region free without issue (I tried to asist Will Hay with his and it gave us grief, but mine and 3 others I have done went RPC-1 without a hitch), and the error correction is pretty damn good too. They sound a bit flaky starting up, but that's it balancing the disc. When it's at speed, they're below the average in the noise department and run pretty cool. I rave over these drives - if you get one, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Have a go on the forum search for the other figures I've quoted in the past - I might be wide of the mark today because it's Friday and the weekend starts here !!

Edit: not the link I had in mind, but basically this re-iterates what I've just said - ignore the edit made today, I got the sodding model number wrong... must have been typing under the influence...
