New ideas for an interactive stills slideshow

I'm trying to make a very particular Slideshow:

I Want to make an interactive slideshow, so instead of making a simple movie of the stills, i tought about putting the images inside the Menu,
so i will have some navigation between images.

My question, as an authoring newbie, are those:

1- Can i make the audio in menu not to restart every time i push a button
to advance in slideshow? can i make it unlinked to the show, so i can advance manually through the images while audio continues to play?

2- Is there any way to make the slideshow advance in automatic without pressing any button? and if yes, it's possible to make in the menu a button that let me choice between automatic or manual show?

3- Can i put transitions between each other image in the menu?

4- Perhaps there is yet a way to make a slideshow with transitions without making a movie file, keeping the images as physical stills which are faster to make and lighter than traditional movie?
