I am trying to Capture home videos passing the VCR signal (RCA) into my Camcorder, out from it's DV into a Firewire card.
I am trying to find a specific Capturing Software that would allow me to apply cropping, deinterlace, select the frame rate and resolution prior to capture to achieve an avi with the best possible resolution at 700mb to be stored on a CD Rom.
Does anyone know software that would allow me to do this?

As DV by Firewire is a simple data file transfer and not capturing just copying a file, you can't do it.

I have already done it many times with the freeware; dvapp, WinDV-1.2.3, amcap in the tool section. Also with Vegas Video 3.0 but had to remove the 'Enable DV Device Control' to record the signal. Microsoft movie maker also has that DV Device Control you do not have the option to remove.
But I am looking for software that allows you to set up everything before you record "apply cropping, deinterlace, select the frame rate and resolution". -

I am not copying anything...I am using the camcorder DV converters to route my VCRs AV signal into my computer.
I have already captured with the software stated above, but they don't offer crop, deinterlace, etc during capture.

Could you suggest a simple capturing application that would allow me to setup crop, deinterlace, etc. as well compression during capture.[/quote] -
Now how can I put this in terms simple enough for you to understand?
YOU ARE COPYING A DV FILE.
You are passing an analogue video signal into your DV camcorder. This is then converting on-the-fly the analogue video signal into a DV data stream. You are then using a Firewire connection to COPY that data stream to your computer.
You are not capturing, the camcorder is. You are COPYING. If you can find a camcorder that can crop, deinterlace, etc, you could do it.
Is this simple enough now??? -
There may be an App that can suck up DV and operate on it in realtime
but I don't know what it is. Mainconcept is supposed to be able to
encode on the fly , but that may be just for analog capture.
There's nothing impossible about it with a sufficiently fast computer,
I just can't recall any that do it. -
i think cropping on the fly is a non-issue here, cos you can never know how to save the dv avi file so it would exactly fit on a 700 MB disc.
i think you sould just save it and crop etc. afterwards.
this is a normal procedure: capture/save, edit, burn.Music was my first love, and it will be my last -
Yeah ok...Technically I am copying the data converted by the DV Converters of the cam to my hardrive. But in every program I am using, the program command that is available to copy is called capture!!!
But all of that is beside the point...forget it. ok. I just would like to know if there is a simple program that would allow me to select a compression and filters when capturing. Thats all.
I do not want uncompressed data that will take up my whole drive, and if possable do all the set up prior so when finished there is no additional steps. Like making a dvd into an avi with Vidomi, I rip once, than use my vidomi template to convert it to a 700mb cropped & deinterlaced file.
That simple...but for capturing its not. So if anyone knew of a simple program like Vidomi, but for capturing please let me know. -
DV is only 13 gig/hour compared to 110 for uncompressed RGB
Surely you have at least an 80 gig drive -
if you don't have to edit capture as mpeg2 may save time (and disk space). i think every program with dvd burn capabilities can do that. i know pinnacle studio can.
