  1. I ASKED AROUND AND EVEN WENT TO BEST BUY AND EVERYBODY I TALKED TO SAID THAT ALL DVD AUTHORING SOFTWARE LIMITS YOU TO 1.5 HRS OF VIDEO TIME SO THAT YOU CANT DUB MOVIES. I HAVE A RADEON 8500 ATI ALLINWONDER VIDEO CARD. I CAN AUTHOR 2 1.5 HR VIDEOS AND USE DVD SHRINK 3.1 TO PUT THEM TOGETHER BUT THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY. I WONDER HOW MANY HRS OF OK DVD QUALITY VIDEO YOU CAN PUT ON A DVD THAT WILL PLAY IN A REGULAR PLAYER?

An hour and a half? Chalk up one more advantage for the PC capture way in that "standaone vs. PC" thread I saw a while back. As for how much quality you can get on one disk, the variables are infinite. You can come down on the bitrate if you use 352x480 (or even 352x240) vice full D1, etc, etc. I got two half decent movies on one disk.. Almost 3 hours?

  3. First off you may want to turn off the caps lock. Here is the dillema with homebrewed DVDs, Audio LPCM takes up way to much space and MP2 is not 100% DVD compliant. What are your alternatives? Well at this point TMPG Auth with the AC3 plugin seems to be the easiest way at this point. If a commercial DVD such as LOTR can be compressed with DVD2one to fit on one disc and look relatively good the same can be done with your video. You can use your AIW card to capture either AVI or MPEG2 at a high bit rate, then use TMPG Auth to author it with AC3 then if needed DVDshrink or DVD2ONE to size it. The end result should be a decent quality video.

  4. "DVD quality video" is a really subjective term. What's "DVD quality" to you might not be to me. For example, if I capture a VHS tape to DVD, I don't expect the quality to be as high as something captured off an original source or another DVD.

The limit is determined by your audio and video bitrate and time. Your audio and video bitrate is determined by your eyes and ears.

I just converted a VHS tape to DVD last night. Two hours (tweaked 5% post-authoring to barely fit with DVD shrink). Looks great to me.

I've copied DVDs using DVD Shink with NO perceptible loss in quality. Keyword: perceptible.

  6. umm i do not think you know or the stores know what they are talking about.

PC method: you can go nuts with all the options

homedeck machines: i can record 2 hours of decent quality onto a disc. SO this 1.hour yahoo you mentioned absolutley makes no sense at all

Never believe anything the dork at Best Buy, Circuit City or any of those other big chains tells you. More times than not, you know more about it than they do.

  9. This reminds me of John Lewis in Oxford street .. they have loads of widescreen Tvs on display .. all of them showing terrestrial broadcast's .. and all of them stretched to fit the screen.. well, hey if you're buying a widescreen Tv you dont want to see those pesky black bars at the sides of the screen! and all the other big dept stores down there do exactly the same.

  10. or i like how the guy at best buy was trying to tell me that the + burners can be used with the "-" blanks (this was WAY before the dual format burners were available, in fact the + burners were just released and no one was even selling media for them yet, at least non-rw). And im sitting their arguing with this moron for 20 mins of my life that i will never get back (and the only reason i was doing so was because i knew i was right and was trying to correct his error).

One more question. Did this guy have an ear piece in his ear (where else? - no, let's don't go there)?

If he did (and if he was to let you listen for a while), you would hear:

"Breath in..." , then 2 seconds later,
"Breath out...", then 2 seconds later,
"Breath in...", then 2 seconds later,
"Breath out...", then 2 seconds later,
"Breath in...", then 2 seconds later,
"Breath out...", then 2 seconds later,

and so on and so on and so on...

But he was most likely to refuse you the chance to listen, because he would be on the floor gasping for breath while you were listening.

Yep ... back in Christmas 96 ... at Wal-Mart in my home town. When Christmas went bye bye ... I was no longer needed in the Electronics Dept.

How can they let someone like me go ... my god ... I came back in later ... months later ... and Tina ... [which later was advanced to a CSM at the store] would grab me and tell me ... "Gary ... we need your help ... can you help that customer ... ".

Geez ... I'm not employed their anymore and I'm helping them ... I tried to come back ... "We only hire "qualified" applicants" was their reply.

I guess they found out about the year I did in jail for Grand Theft Auto[ Arrested on Dec 24th 1990 ]. It was reduced to Joy Riding. We rented a U-Haul truck for 2 Hours and kept it for a week.

But anyways .... I would come into Wal-mart and the dudes working in the Electronics department ... oh man ... one dude that had been there for a while ... was fired for stealing Game Boy cartridges.

That was where you made your mistake.

Instead of saying "I don't know for sure.. but" they say with 100% ignorant confidence that what they know is 100% fact.

If I go to best buy and expect their knowledge to repalce my independent research.. wow, am I in for a world of pain.
