    500W, agreed.

Also be aware this card has problems with quite a few motherboards:
XFX GeForce FX 5200 256MB DDR AGP8X with TV & DVI Video Card = $94.99 .... I've seen it's red dots of death on a few computers. Other flukes too. It's some NVIDIA thing. Not to beat the old ATI drum, but those cards have fewer problems. It's only AIW captures that take time and practice.

Want good RAM? Try some 1066 or 800 RDRAM ... much better than DDR and SD.

I can see a need for DVD Workshop 2 ... I have the comparable $600 DVDit! PE because of it's power and abilities (approved AC3 encoding, etc).

I'm a fan of INTEL mobo with INTEL CPU.

Not everything uses HT, so spend money wisely on features like that. Do you REALLY need HT?

Pioneer DVD-R burner, 106 or 107 ... nothing else compares.

  2. OK-

Here is what I am still looking for

    1. P4 Mother Board (that can handle P4 2.8 800 Mhz FSB with HYPER THREADING) AND on board Firewire

    2. A case WITH Firewire and USB 2.0 FRONT inputs

I am still open to an AMD CPU and MoBo. But I think I just got really hooked on the idea of a P4

Sominex24, just about any P4 MB that supports up to 3.06GHz is more than enough to house the 2.8 with HT without any problems. Just be sure that the MB supports HT. As for the case, there are many cases under $100 that has front Firewire and USB ports, so its tough to recommend a particular one. It just depends on what your style is, and like Lordsmurf said, 500W power supply is potent for powering everything without any problems.

Also like Lordsmurf mentioned, I am also an Intel person since all the computers I dealt with had Intel processors, and Ive never been disappointed. Ive never had an AMD system so I cant really measure as far as performance goes, and since I dont care for overclocking stuff I just like it when it works the way it should. From what I have heard, AMD based systems are mainly used for gaming, while most of the Intel systems are used for production work like video......like I said before its all based on preference and what your video needs are. Good luck on your search.

I have the staff of power, now it's up to me to use it to its full potential to command my life and be successful.

I did ended up finding a case I like that has the front inputs for both USB 2.0 AND firewire

    Case

Only has a 400 Watt power supply though. Will that be enough? Or should I keep looking for a 500?

And thanks for all the great input

Looks like a pretty cool case you have there, plenty of drive bays and plenty of room for expansion.....as for the power supply, I am not sure what devices you plan to incorporate in the system, but I would recommend at least at minumum a 450 watt PW for video work. You could always upgrade later if you need to.

  6. Can the AMD's rival the "Hyper Threading" technology of P4?
LOL Hyperthreading is a marketing gimick! You get maybe 5-10% performance increase compared to non-HT... An AthlonXP 2500 will run as fast or faster than a 2.6GHz P4....

For the same price you would pay for a 2.6Ghz P4 you can get an Athlon XP 3000 400 which will absolutly destroy the P4.

  7. Anyone know anything about this RAM ?

    It's $199 for a 1GB PAIR of dual channel matching 512MB

Would I be better off going with something from "Corsair" as suggested?

How important are "Heat spreaders" and other features of RAM?

Hiya! You've gotten lots of advice. Just wanted to let you know to check out the website www.mwave.com. They have great motherboard combos to choose from. I built 3 pcs and ordered my motherboard combos from them. You can choose if you want memory installed on it or not. I looked on the internet and found them to be the cheapest and most reasonable compared to other online stores such as newegg.com.

I put together a motherboard combo from mwave.com for you to check out. I used your earlier posting of what components you were considering. Here is the link:
    http://www.mwave.com/mwave/ViewBag.hmx?scriteria=&UpDepts=BUNCPU&DName=Motherboard%20a...NTEL%20BUNDLES

As for the firewire just use your old card. From what I've read using a dedicated firewire card is better when using other pc components. Good Luck on building your pc!

I sure have a lot of great advice! Thank you all very much. I am getting very close to making the final decisions and getting the parts this week.

The case seems to be a good buy and I am almost certain on that. The rest is down to the wire though

Budz- I checked out that link, but it said "shopping cart" empty.

    Can you re-try it?

    THANKS!

It says empty because the cookie for that cart is on budz's PC. budz, you should just give the links to hte individual products so he can build it himself.

  11. Are there any sites that allow me to search for cases based on criteria I want the case to have?

(ie, USB 2.0 front inputs, clear side, etc, etc)

The cases I had previously selected has pretty bad reviews from Newegg. Had all the features I wanted too! But looks like it is all around NOT LIKED (side clear panel very scratched, dead power sources, etc, etc)
