OK I have read alot of the forums and can't find anything about this topic.
I am converting a Flash movie to an .avi file, but only have a few codecs to choose from. On top of that I have only been able to succesfully convert Cinepak .avi files using TMPGEnc plus.
Is Cinepak good enough quality, or is there another way?

The best you can use is DivX (version 5 or above), directly from www.divx.com
Cinepak doesn't compress much, and your resulting .mpeg2 may be too large to burn on one CDR.Cheers, Jim

he didnt say he wanted to compress it that much ... divx is not a very good for quality - only for size ...
what you want to do with the avi file will make the choice of what codec to use -- and there are over 50 avi type codecs ..."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
OK size is not an issue. My problem is Flash. When I try to export the file as an .avi I get a list lke this.
The only one that will successfully output and that TMPGEnc will read is Cinepak.
First question- Is Cinepak good quality?
Second quesiton- Is there a way to expand this list and use a better codec?
Any help would be appreciated. -
no - cinepak is not good quality ...
windows media 9 and the canopus DV codec can be good quality as can some others there - but uncompressed (last choice there) is the best quality ..
if tmpgenc will not read it -- see instructions on changing VFAPI settings .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Install DivX. It will show up in the list.
You could also get AC3, XviD, etc...like BJ_M said, there are over 50 types of .avi codecs.
I use DivX 4 (sometimes 5) for size, and Canopus for quality.Cheers, Jim
