  1. Hi I'm new to this forum and I've been trying to figure out how to get a .avi movie on a disk that plays in my home dvd player for a while now. I've finlaly figured out how to convert and cut the movie, and now all i want to do is get my two split .mpgs onto some cdr(or dvd-rs) and play them on my theature. I have tried burning them several times with no succes. I have Nero Burning ROM 6 Ultra Edition. The only tutorials I've found explain for Nero 5.5. How can i burn a .mpg to a video CD in Nero 6 that wil work on home dvd players? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  2. Are the resulting files "in spec" for vcd. VCD spec for NTSC is:

    resolution: 352x240
    bitrate: 1150 FIXED
    audio: 44.1mhz

I wont be much help in the nero 6 version, but with nero and nero express, they have wizards that walk you through how to burn a VCD.

When you encoded your video (you didnt say how), what did you use (TMPGENC, CCE, MAINCONCEPT, or nero?) and what was the output.

Also, you didnt say what the error was. Was it that it burns successfully, however, will not play in your player? If that is the case, it may be your player. Did you check on the left to make sure that your dvd player plays VCD.

Does the VCD play Ok on a software dvd player using an app like powerdvd?

Where in the process are you having problems?

  3. Hi there, Don't want to sound cheeky but if your using a "bootleg" version of Nero 6 it will not work on any player - they are getting quite good and knowing which key codes are genuine and which are "home grown" key codes. The software may accept the key code but all the software does is produce faulty disks which don't play.

If you have on the other hand a proper copy then the previouos message about tutorials may be the best bet.

In my opinion the easiest way to convert avi files to mpg WHICH nero accepts is using tmpgenc - load the avi file and simply choose either the vcd or svcd template - the resulting file will be fine for nero.

    Josh.

Forget Nero for authoring. It is good at burning stuff to disc (but so is apps with a footprint at about 1% of Neros) but that as far as I'd go, Use VCDEasy for authoring, then burn the ISO VCDEasy produces with Nero if VCDEasy can't burn on your system.

  5. Wow. That was fast and comforting response. I can’t answer all of your questins right now (I’m at school) but:
I used TMPGENC to convert a high quality .avi to a big .mpg. ( I then split the .mpg into two smaller .mpgs I’m trying to burn one on to a CD-R.) My error was that i burned successfully and it looked just like a normal dvd as far as in the computer. But when i put it in my dvd player i get a check cd error. I havnet yet tried to play it on my computer dvd player, but i will when i get home. Unfortunately I had not allocated space in my budget for a legit copy of Nero 6. Mine is pirated. I didnt know that this could cause a problem and that may very well be what my issue is. I wil also check that when i get home. Last I wil defintily give VCDEasy a shot, because i like the way that sounds and because Nero could be having issues. As far as VCDEasy goes, is there a tutorial out here for buring .mpg VCDs with VCDEasy or is it self explanitory? Anyway I’ll give it a nother look when i get home and write another post then. Thanks a lot for the help and the quick response this site/forum looks like a GREAT resource. 8) 8)

  6. The error may not be in Nero, nor in your conversion, but in the file splitter you used.
Not many splitters will correctly split a file, leaving the start and stop check bits in the right place. Sure, the computer can play it, in WMP, PowerDVD, or whatever, but the burned (S)VCD just doesn't work in standalones.
I have had MUCH more success splitting the avi first, THEN converting in TMPGEnc or MainConcept MPEG Encoder, and burning with (a questionable) copy of Nero 6.
I use EZ Video splitter, but there are others that seem to work as well.
You could also just use TMPGEnc to split the video and encode at the same time. Check out the tutorials in the left hand bar on this page.

Yes, I definately agree that splitting the final mpeg is something to be avoided if at all possible. Better to solit the AVI or encode in 2 passes, using the source range feature in TMPGEnc (or in VirtualDub and frameserve).

  8. I havent still been able to go through and do a complete investigation int the problem, but I have discovered that the very first cd i burned (before the 20 others i burned at different speeds/NTSC/PAL/etc settings) plays fine in PowereDVD on my computer. So what could be my problems if i burned a cd that works on my computer dvd player but not my home one??? (By the way the quality is a little diminished on the cd but nothing i couldnt deal with and i really just wana get the movie on my player before i even worry about quality.)

Software DVD/(S)VCD players are usually much more forgiving than their hardware counterparts, accepting out of specs discs to a much higher degree.

I keep reiterating my mantra: Use VirtualDub to edit your AVI source. Use TMPGEnc to encode it. (Use the right template until you know what you're doing.)
Use VCDEasy to author your (S)VCD.
Possibly use Nero to burn the cue/bin from VCDEasy (if VCDEasy can't burn on your system).

  10. Okay I'm not sure what my other problems are and I think the best plan is to follow mats hopbergs advice. Iv downloaded VirtualDub 1.5.1 and it looks fine. I'll try to figure it out from there but when i look for tutorials i get a lot of difernt stuff. am i trying to make a (s)vcd or a vcd ??? What is the differnce between the two?

  11. Okay Ive been following a .avi to svcd tutorial that is very good and has been working very well. However at the step im at i am working in TMPGEnc and im told choose:

NTSC if the frames per second (fps) is 29.97.
NTSC Film if the frames per second (fps) is 23.976
PAL if the frames per second (fps) is 25.

But, all the programs ive used to evaluate my .avi (AVIcodec and VirtualDub) say that its fps is 12.500. What does that number mean, is it possible, and what setting shoud i choose in TMPGEnc ??? (NTSC NTSC Film or PAL?). ANy help greatly appreciated

(Exact stats for the file I got were: 720x336, 12.500 fps (80000 us)

That's odd! But then again, its half PAL, so try using the PAL template...
