  1. I'm trying to get files from a Philips set-top recorder (vob files + ac3 sound) edited onto dvd-r disks. Problem is averything I've tried wants to re-encode the files. All I want to do is chop out ad's etc but if possible have a transition between the two - is it possible with fairly simple software? Mydvd 5 does a reasonable job of cross fading the audio with a simple wipe etc, but I can't stop the thing 'hanging' 3/4 of the way through a job so I don't know what the output would look like.

I admit I don't understand the workings of these various formats, but most progs' seem to convert the vob from the recorder to another format to edit then back to vobs when it re-encodes. Surely these coversions affect the quality....no different to re compressing an mpeg file?

Thanks for any info, I've tried many demos - ulead, sonic, cyberlink but all seem to have something missing (or is that me )

  2. try out womble mpeg video wizard. it's available from www.womble.com

edit's mpg's without re-encode.. easy interface too. (once you figure it out) Don't know about the fade's or wipes or anything though.. I never use them.

  4. try either movie factory 2 OR TMPGENC DVD Author. Either of these two programs will allow you to cut out various parts, etc. w/o reencoding.

You could also us dvdshrink, however, I think that the above apps would serve your needs better.
