Typically I just do simple copies of the entire disc, or movie only. However, I wanted to play around with this new shrink a bit and see what I could do with it. The resulting dvd is virtually a coaster and I'm wondering why. Lemme splain what I did.

Set it up to do the entire disc of SWAT, but I adjusted the compression on the extras and menus down to 50%, and cropped the titles and the credits off the movie to try and get as much space as possible for it. I ended up with around 68% on the flick which I was happy about.

Put a blank disc in the burner, pushed the button, walked away for an hour, came back and it had completed. (yes...I did deep analysis)

Upon playing the movie....it starts up fine and plays the opening sequence, but when it gets to the main menu...none of the buttons work. Then...whilst I was pushing non-responding buttons...it started cycling from menu to menu. The chapter menu, the extras menu etc....but none of the choices would highlight, nor could they be clicked. It just cycled from one menu to the next.

The movie can be viewed on my puter if I simply seek out the files on the dvdr and play them, but the disc won't play like it's sposed to (menu driven). Results were the same on both my standalone and my rom.

Any ideers what I did to cause this?

  2. Re-authoring in DVD Shrink will NOT retain your menu button's functionality. You can drag the menu across but it will be converted into a regular video clip. This is common knowledge.

DVD Shrink is working the way is supposed to.

Common knowledge eh? Perhaps by folks who use it often. I've been reading posts for months and never saw it mentioned once. O well.

Thx for the reply. THAT makes sense.

If you are uncertain about any of the steps you are taking or if you are "experimenting" I find the best thing to do is to rip to your harddrive first and then open the ripped files with PowerDVD, you would have noticed right away that the menus were not working and would have saved yourself a disc.

    Just my $0.02.
