  1. Well, I bought the AVT-8710 but I am a little disappointed in a couple of things I am seeing with it:
It seems to introduce a grid-like pattern I can only describe as very fine dotlike/pixillated-looking. Has anyone noticed this at all?
I was also unsuccesful with a DVD that had the color-striping (CGMS?) type of macrovision. No problems with the other types though.
My biggest concern though is this digital pixillation pattern that is visible when using inputs. I have tried S-Video (vs. the yellow composite type) and that doesn't seem to help much either in this regard.
It also seems a bit fragile as in a lot of the time I have to move it around a bit or otherwise the color goes in and out.
Any user comments on this device appreciated.

I was a very big supporter of the AVT-8710 but now I choose not to promote this device for the same reasons you sited. I too have noticed the small box effect on some of videos. I did try something different that seems to help me get around it most of the times, for my input I use the svideo plug and the output I use the standard composite plugs. In other words I mix them up.

This seems to help most of the times and on some captures I rarely get the boxing effect. I just recently purchased another device to bypass the macrovision. I haven’t used it yet, but I’ve heard some great things about it.

  3. Ah! Some one else notices it .. good, I was thinnking it was just me (or my hook-up) I'll try your 'fix' with s-video in and composite out.
Just to make sure you're seeing what I am with vhs, I can descibe it more accurately to look like a a miniature honeycomb pattern. A grid-like pattern that one might see when looking at the front of a microwave oven door (if that makes any sense
Which other device did you get for the macro stuff?
And thanks Bob for the message regarding setting the auto-signal detect to manual. I had figured that out just before you wrote and it did fix the color-strobing but not the aforemntioned "honeycomb" pattern.

  4. Well, ejai .. that little trick seemed to help things out a bit in regard to lessening the "honeycomb" on-screen pattern effect. I will say that it definitely does seem to resolve almost all macrovision problems.
