Does anyone know of any freeware or shareware Mac programs that convert sound files to AC3 files, besides Ffmpegx? I know about A-Pack, but you have to buy Studio Pro to get it, and Studio Pro doesn't work on a G3, which is all I have right now.

ffmpegX doesn't work for me. It was a month or more since I last tried.
I read the instructions, and I believe it said to use the ffmpeg engine to encode the ac3, and have the video set on passthrough. The resulting ac3 is not accepted by dvdsp.
Just for kicks I through the ac3 onto mpegInfo and it appears it is really an mp2 with an AC3 extension.
I really would like this to work. Any thoughts?

Well, MPEG audio is accepted into DVDSP version 1, which works on G3 machines ... Somewhere along the line you were able to try DVDSP2 so maybe you have version 1 lying around going unused? If so, just use A.Pack and be done with it. A.Pack is essentially unchanged from version 1 to version 2.

Are you sure DVDSP1 works on G3s? Apple's docs say it requires a minimum of G4.

I'm almost sure I used to use it on my G3 iMac before I sold it, but it was late when I posted that so I can't be sure now. I don't have access to a G3 anymore.
