  1. I have a dell with a generic dell dvd drive and there are a few DVDS that are unrecognized by my DVD drive. DVDshrink, dvddecryper doesn't work either.

Some DVDs that have this problem are
    1)re-animator
    2)big daddy

Anyway to fix this or go around this problem? :|

I dont know what model ur Dell is but I use a POS Dell at work with a Samsung model DVD drive from Dell. It reads nothing except pressed DVD's, thats when it dosnt over heat and start artifacting. Dell put some of the worst parts in their lower end units like what we buy as corporate units. Unless its their top end units most Dell internal parts are crap. I tried using DVD Decryter and got tons of read errors and with DVDShrink, it terminated with fatal read error. I bought in one of my external USB2 LG DVD drives to try and had no errors, but real slow since the Dell is only USB1.1 (900kb/s or about 0.7x read). UR prob could just be the DVD drive that was provided by Dell. The DVD drive in my case is located right at the top, with a CD burner right underneath so little to no air flow and it gets hot. U can try relocating the DVD drive to another spot in the case if its a heat prob and see if that helps.

Sound like a dodgy drive. I have a Toshiba DVD rom and it's become very picky about what it plays, can't be bothered sending it for repair so i'll just buy another. Is your Dell machine still under warranty?

Dell puts some cheap crap in their systems, especially low end systems, to keep price down and profit up. This helps to keep them competitive with other companies. When it comes to video work IMO it pays to get a better quality part or complete system.

  6. dell generally uses either the samsung 616 or the lite-on 163 in their systems. neither one is a bad drive at all. however their OEMs seems to have some defects more frequently than the retail versions. I had a Lite-on 163, and was having the exact same problems as you. I had them replace it and they sent the samsung instead. now I'm ripping just fine. every DVD works even the ones the 163 wouldn't recognize at all. Dell admitted to me on the phone with tech support that there was a rash of 163s with bad lasers in them that they sent out and have had to replace.

  7. Hey guys just wanted to give a update.

I have a dell 4600 series. It definately is not top of the line, but for aprox. $400 I am not complaining.

So lets get down to it, I popped one of the DVDs (re-animator) that i had problem reading in my Pioneer 106, waaaaaaaalaaaaaa. Problem solved. DVDshrinked with no problem.

So in conclusion, I would say that the shody oem dell DVD drive was the problem. I willl try the other problem disk big daddy tommorrow and will report.

    Thanks for everyones help.
