  1. Anyone else getting pixelization during high motion scenes when the making an svcd with forty two? Is this normal for this app? It seems this app makes an avi first then converts it to mpeg, and I've seen other apps like mencoder that don't have this pixelization problem. What other apps can I use to convert an avi to crystal clear mpeg like forty two? I like the app except for this pixelization trouble. Thanks.

I'm still using an old version of forty two (1.5.2 ... hey if aint broke ...) but to me the SVCD output is barely any different to the original DVD output (on a TV, on my mac screen it looks a lot worse).

SVCDs created from DivX source material are a different story though (this is using ffmpegX, not forty two). Noticeable blockiness then, especially in high motion scenes.

  3. No problem with my copy either. What do you mean by "high motion" exactly?

it doesnt encode an avi.. the avi is just a container for the video.... if u view the avi it wont look any different than it does on the dvd.

  5. Thanks for the comments. Converted Futurama and XFiles discs to ksvcd2 often have brief blocky pixelization during high motion scenes, running, dancing, crashing, etc. Also I notice pixelization where video titles (like credits) are video rendered and placed on top of a film source. Other than that the quality is very high, often indistinguishable from dvd.

  6. So is the pixilation issue specific to these two film series in KVCD only? I've never used this format so I might not be so helpful.... Have you encoded any other TV program disks or film disks with KVCD? I'm wondering if it doesn't have something to do with your source material.

Hey if you look really close at the Matrix DVD there are pixelations duing "high motion video" and this is the DVD. So you would suspect the SVCD/DIVX etc to have the same thing.

  8. hey nfhulsin8025, so far I like the KSVCD setting and my source material are from dvd. Regarding the pixelization, I've only done a few titles so far, but these two are the only ones to give trouble. The others come out fantastic. I tried converting futurama to regular svcd and got the same pixelated results. I've done several spanish films and they've all come out virtually identical to the original. I'm stumped.

This sounds normal to me. You're drastically limiting the amount of data in an SVCD compared to a DVD and high motion scenes obviously suffer the most. Also squashed DVDs from DVD2OneX often have noticeable blockiness around the credits and in animation-type scenes (in particular the menu graphics on a lot of DVDs), in SVCDs I've made it is just as bad. Even on commercially-pressed VCDs you get this problem - I have loads of VCDs where the movie itself is fantastic quality but you can barely read the credits.
