  1. Should I be ticking this box in order to get accurate chapter points. Or does this cause problems with certain authoring programs?

Need general advice about closed GOP in Canopus ProCoder 1.5

    Thanks.

You generally only use it if encoding for multi angle footage. Otherwise, as BJ_M, don't use it. It decreases quality and doesn't really give you any advantages.

  4. Thanks for the advice.

I had read that Sonic (Reel I think) DVD users needed to use closed gop.

As I'm about to try the Sonic DVDProducer trial, I thought I might need to use this also.

    Thanks again.

Well, some GOPs are always going to be closed when you encode. Its just that you don't want to tell the encoder to close all the GOPs, that decreases quality for no reason. But many encoders, for example, will close the GOP if you manually insert an I-Frame (for chapters.) I'd need more context to know what that statement regarding Sonic (Real DVD you think...) was referring to. It might just be saying that the specific GOP would need to be closed to add a chapter point there. I kinda doubt any authoring software would require all closed GOPs. Like I said its not required by the DVD standard and its pretty much never done in any commercial encodes (except for multi-angle footage of course.)

Also Sonic Scenarist definitely does not require all closed GOPs, so I wouldn't think Sonic Real DVD would either, but a short test encode should clear that up for you.

a older version of REEL did require closed GOPS , but that has been fixed

scenarist , REEL DVD and DVD producer all came from different companies ....

Most Sonics Solutions products require closed GOPs ... at least at some point in time. My version of ReelDVD and DVDit! require closed GOP.
