We hardly knew ya!!!
:P
Not that I have been posting for a long time - I have been reading for a very long time, almost as long as I have been reading doon9 - I am not even a member of that August site/forum.
As for newbs ruining things - isnt that what newbs are meant to do?? Every one is a newb at least once. Don't be so down on them now that you have reached l33t-h00d

I'm on this scene long enough and I'm active on various forums, just to know a few things about this scene...
This forum here, is "mainstream" and somehow "advance" the same time. There is not a kiddy place. The oeople posting here, are mostly grown ups, more than 25 years old, know exactly what they wish to do and know exactly how to ask it (well, not all the time, but mostly...)
Since we don't speak here for mpeg 4 in general, the way I see it we (users like me, moderators, etc), we manage to gather all those who want to do all this as a hobby and in a personal level. And not for their PCs, for their living room.
I don't know many technical related forums that gathers people of all ages, from all around the world, read, post, ask and have fun at the same time as it happens here. And if you search them further, you'll be amazed with the fact that the ones who stay long, are very wide people, with many interests, not only related to this subject and somehow manage to show it and share it with other people here.
The reasons some users move to other forums, are countless:
For example, here there is no trading. Many who learn all this stuff, from a point and beyond wish the gather money with all this. Well, they cann't use this forum for their actions, so they move to other ones which trading is allowed.
Others, learn to do something and that's it. They don't interest to go further. So, they stop activities on those subjects and search for new intersts.
A typical thing which happens, is when a newbie come here, read, ask and learn some stuff. Then he change his avatar and start acting as the Greatest of the Greatest. Well, the advance members of this forum don't allow this, so soon or later, he leaves. This place here, is not for the ones who act like this. Is only for people who like this hobby. Enthusiasts. Here is the difference...
Also, there is a fair amount of people, who from a point and beyond want to get more technical with all this. Well, here is an international forum and only few people can follow too technical conversations, because of the language barrier. Me included. Don't mention that the tradition of this forum is the "how to"'s, not the "what is behind this" or "I want to program and do that, help me". So, plenty users learn many things here and then move to other more technical or specific forums (like kwag's, doom's and others (less legal...)). On those forums, the subject is the same but somehow it is given more "technical like". Well, some people like it more that the way we doing it here.
Personally, If I don't like something from our scene (not our forum) is the ignorance from same well known other forums about this site here. DVDrhelp has great hits, members and also activity. Has a great knowledge database, only few may have. This site also is friendly compared other ones. Unfortunatelly, this is not vice versa. An example: When we discuss something here new, soon or later someone gonna start a parallel discussion on Doom9's. And vice versa. The differnece is that we mention "on doom9 I read...", while doom9's forum users gonna say something like "I read that...".
I don't know if you realise that, but here we have a great attitude as members, which is something really rare for public internet forums.
The bottom line is, that all forums, all activities, has 2 levels: The entry/ learning one and the advance one. The enthusiasts and poor hobbiest of the second level are very - very few. That explains and why only few old members stay here. -
Satstorm: I've always liked you man, you seem like one of lifes good guys.
Shame I'll never get chance to buy you a beer, because I'd have liked to.

I did post a rather humble public apology, though. Sometimes you just have to step up to the plate and let the bat crack your skull open a little.

I have to agree with SatStorm--you said it all man--thanks!!
