  1. Hi everyone,

Just a curious question: if two different major brand names of stand alone players have similar specs, but the exact same region-free procedure, what are the chances that they are actually the same player and just rebadged?

I realize this kind of practice happens a lot with the smaller brands; but while looking through an online manual for a Yamaha progressive scan player, I noticed the on-screen setup looks identical to a player made by Philips -- in addition to the fact that they both have the same region hack. Is there any chance that they are (basically) the same player?

The big difference is price, of course.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...

  2. Yamaha DVD players have always been made by Philips, it's never really been that much of a secret

To answer your original question, however, similar hacks does not necessarily mean same manufacturer (in your case it does of course), especially in cheaper non-brand players. Hacks usually relate to the chipset used (hence the large amount of players seemingly different on the outside which have similar OSDs - it's chipset driven, not manufacturer driven) - eg see how many players use the number sequence 1379 somewhere in the remote hack : these are MediaTek chipset players.

    Hope that helps.

Chances are if it's a new Yammy the hack for the Philips LX3600D will work - OPEN 99990, IIRC (I may be wrong)

Thanks for the information. I did not know that!

Unfortunately, I was hoping that wasn't the case, though. I have been looking for a player that wil fit my requirements (see post), and Philips models just aren't quite right... So if the Yamaha model is made by Philips like you said, probably they will behave the same way, which means back to search for me...
