There is this one setting - well more than one - in TMPGenc that I keep wondering about.

'No motion search for still picture part by half pixel'

Up until now, I have used the wizard default - which has this checked. But now I wonder. When I cap TV action episodes like Star Trek, and play them back after conversion, I do notice a slight blurring on movement - like it's trying to focus, but the frame is too fast. It does not last long, and I'm not sure if it's in the original source that way - but I doubt it. Still or very slow scenes are in focus.

Does this setting have any impact on what I'm describing? And do you leave it checked?

  2. I uncheck it unless i'm doing slideshows. I don't know if it has any affect, hell I don't know what half of the settings in tmpgenc do. I'm still confused by 3:2 pulldown and IVTC. But Lordsmurf recommends to turn it off, so I do too.

  3. Actually, it does have an effect and it's the reason you are seeing this "blurring" occur in particular scenes. Basically, you are sacrificing some quality loss in one type of scene (motion) to improve quality in another type of scene (still/little movement). I always uncheck it.

    @ All,

    These two links:

    http://dvd-hq.info/Compression.html and

    http://www.lordsmurf.com/convert/tmpgenc/tmpgencplus.htm

...both provide good details on the settings in TMPGEnc. The first is specifically for DVD compliant MPEG2, with the second being for MPEG1 & 2.

I hope they help, or are at least of interest.

I had read both those sites before, and while I tried what they had detailed, I also have experimented with small clips. I didn't see any difference ( I have old eyes. ), so I got to wondering what other's opinions were.

So how do you keep both dynamics?

Would I have to switch to 'high quality (very slow)', or is there another encoder to consider.

Perhaps one that is faster also. (Not asking for much am I? )

With bitrates > 2500kb/s, it doesn't really count.

With lower bitrates, mostly VBR, sometimes help, sometimes no. Mostly no.

    I don't suggest it.
