  1. I've been trying to convert some MPG files that I have to dvd-video, but can't seem to solve the audio sync problem. It starts off OK, but by about 5 minutes into the video the sound is way ahead of the video. I've tried a few different authoring programs (TMPEG author, Ulead, the NeoDVD that came with the player)-all of them took the mpg files, but none of them managed to burn a watchable DVD. I've cheked the VOB files that are created in PowerDVD, and those are out of sync as well, so it's not a player problem. I've also tried stripping out the audio with VirtualDub, and then using the separate audio stream in the mastering software to no avail.

Any of the research I've done so far seems to indicate that the problem is that the audio in the files I have was encoded at 44.1 kHz, but that DVD needs this to be 48 kHz (since the video is MPEg-2 it should be DVD compliant already). I haven't found a resource that works though, so any help would be appreciated!

MPEG-2 isn't necessarily DVD compliant. As you say, if the audio is 44.1kHz it is not DVD compliant. Try to demultiplex your MPEG file, resample the audio to 48kHz and multiplex.
